Oscar’s are over; LOTR misses, Shrek hits

by on Mar.25, 2002, under General News

I haven’t seen A Beautiful Mind yet, so I don’t know if it was better, but it beat out strong contender The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in all the big categories, seemingly showing the Academy is still unwilling to accept fantasy in the mainstream. The most mainstream category LOTR got was for Original Score, plus the usual techincal stuff (Makeup, Visual Effects, Cinematography). Dreamworks’ Shrek, however, took home the first-ever Animated Feature award, beating Disney/Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., who instead took Best Song for Randy Newman’s “If I Didn’t Have You”.
