A Scanner Darkly soundtrack

by on Jul.31, 2006, under Audio

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I had the opportunity to listen to the soundtrack for A Scanner Darkly. Again, music reviews aren’t my thing, but here is an overview.

Kind of keeping with the style of of the movie (live action but rotoscoped into hand-drawn animation), the music, created by Graham Reynolds, has a decidedly electronic feel to it, although accoustic instruments were also used.

The CD consists of 22 tracks, the longest of which clocks in at only 4:38, and that was a DJ mix.

Alas, with all these short tracks, I felt more like this CD was just background and incidental music, without a “theme” to focus on. Perhaps this is typical of most soundtracks, but personally I expect variations on a big theme, with the variations being used to affect emotion in the listener.

For those who have enjoyed the movie, you may also enjoy the overtones that this CD provides, but it won’t have the broad appeal that something like Superman Returns does.
