The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion review
posted by Doc on Monday April 28, @03:46PM
from the return-to-narnia dept.
Books I don't generally review or carry reviews for tie-in books to feature films, but in this case I made an exception for a couple of reasons. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion isn't just some cheap "here's some photos of us making a movie" book, but it also involves the second installment movie installment of a beloved fantasy series, and I have an in-house Narnia expert. So Read More for her take on this quite extensive tie-in...The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian comes out in theaters on May 16th.

Horses on Mars and Dinosaurs in Utah
posted by Doc on Monday August 06, @08:05AM
from the dept.
Books TheThunderChild writes "There are two new book reviews at The Thunder Child: a new release The Heart of Mars by Chuck Rosenthal, and a retro review of Raptor Red, by Robert T. Bakker. The publisher's blurb for The Heart of Mars exclaims "Horses on Mars," and horses are featured on the cover as well, but this really gives a misleading idea of what this wonderful, poetic and poignant novel is about. An amphibian race called the Nutian have Returned to Earth and taken over, saving the remnants of the humans who survived global warming and global war, but history (not to mention literature) is repeating itself on Mars... Paleontologist Robert Bakker, who was the model for Michael Crichton's character Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, and a proponent that birds are descended from dinosaurs, wrote his first fiction novel over a decade ago, about a Utahraptor he calls Raptor Red. Check out both reviews at http://thethunderchild.com"

Editorial Review of The Neutrino Effect
posted by Doc on Friday December 13, @06:45PM
from the books-to-buy dept.
Books Jon Casper writes "EDITORIAL REVIEW The familiar theme of alien invasion is treated in author Michael Kirshteyn?s THE NEUTRINO EFFECT with refreshing optimism and a sure-handed style. Told from the point of view of a Russian Scientist entrepreneur named Vladimir Ustinov, the story takes place in a future some seventy years from now, in which the author speculates that peace among the nations may not be such an outrageous concept." Lucifer's Hammer, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
posted by Doc on Monday June 17, @07:43PM
from the rock-meets-Earth dept.
Books Most of you have seen Armageddon - and probably a few of you like me scoffed at the realism. You've probably seen Deep Impact with a somewhat more realistic portrayal. Well, neither hold a candle to Lucifer's Hammer, probably the most realistic portrayal of any "big rock hits Earth" movie. Read More.

Review: Niven/Pournelle's The Mote in God's Eye and The Gripping Hand

from the brownies-and-mediators-and-warriors,-oh-my! dept.
Books I just recently read both The Mote in God's Eye, followed by the sequel The Gripping Hand, written some 18 years later. For my first foray into a non-Known Space Niven work, I was very impressed with the former, a little less so with the latter. Read More for more details - but beware of spoilers.
