Star Trek: Nemesis gets the green light

by on Nov.30, 2001, under Movies

The tenth Star Trek feature film, Star Trek: Nemesis, got the green light from Paramount to begin production. It has been written by John Logan (Gladiator), and be produced by Rick Berman and directed by Stuart Baird (Executive Decision, U.S. Marshalls). Visual effects will be by Digital Domain (Titanic, The Lord of the Rings). Actually, this is a bit old, but I hadn’t reported it yet…

fans.starwars.com to shut down Dec. 20th

by on Nov.29, 2001, under General News

The official Star Wars site has announced that Lucas Online will cease hosting fans.starwars.com, which hosted tons of sanctioned fan websites, originally set up in March of 2000. I’m guessing it got too expensive for Lucas to foot the bill. Note that they are not killing the web sites themselves – as long as they continue to comply with the sanctioning agreement, they can host their site anywhere.

Star Trek actors break record on Weakest Link

by on Nov.27, 2001, under General News

No spoilers here, just a note that the just-aired Weakest Link special with actors from the various Star Trek series featured the biggest pot in the shows American history so far – $167,500. These guys were pretty smart. Also, it appears that Roxann Dawson (B’Elanna Torres, Star Trek: Voyager) took offense at a comment from Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher, Star Trek: The Next Generation), prompting an apology on his web site.

Update 11/29: The site is accessible now…

Andromeda to be dumbed down?

by on Nov.26, 2001, under Television

I heard a rumor somwhere (probably on UseNet) that Andromeda was being reworked in a story sense to get rid of arc-like plot lines, because of the difficulty of a viewer joining in in the middle of a series (where have I heard that before?). Now it seems it’s true: Co-creator Robert Hewitt Wolfe announced on SlipStreamNews that he is no longer an Executive Producer, due to pressures from Tribune entertainment and Fireworks (and even star and fellow EP Kevin Sorbo) to make it more episodic. Less internal conflict, more Sorbo. Another win for the Neilsen family…

It also has a “HomeWorlds” section where members can create an area for themselves. One called Federation Outpost is basically a log done by one of the members based on fictional Star Trek missions they go on. It also has…” Read More for the full details of The Sci-Fi Alliance

Headline gleanings

by on Nov.20, 2001, under General News

Mostly scraped off of SCI FI Wire: Kate Mulgrew (Capt. Janeway) has confirmed she will appear in Star Trek: Nemesis (as an admiral in charge of Picard, no less!); Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is already filming; a sixth, unfinished Hitchhiker’s Trilogy book from the late Douglas Adams may get published; and Morgan and Wong are developing a “historical perspective of the future” for TV with Gentry Lee.
