What happened to Rangers
by Doc on Apr.16, 2002, under Television
A lot of speculation and blame has gone around regarding the apparent decision of the SCI FI Channel not to pick up Legend of the Rangers as a series. Well here are the facts we know, as well as some opinions, on what happened. Hint: don’t blame it all on SCI FI Channel.
Live action Akira in the works
by Doc on Apr.13, 2002, under Movies
This is popping up all over the place…I’d have reported it sooner if I wasn’t seeing Wayne Brady (Who’s Line Is It Anyway?) live last night. But anyways, Warner Bros. has optioned a live-version of the cult-fave manga comic Akira, about the post-nuclear war Neo-Tokyo and a secret science experiment that results in the greatest threat to the city. Stephen Norrington is assigned to write and direct, but don’t expect it anytime soon – Norrington is busy on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Update 4/15: There was a request for where it was said that it was live-action and not another anime. Coming Attractions is one place, citing The Hollywood Reporter.

by Doc on Apr.10, 2002, under General News
As part of Free Comic Book Day, where on Saturday, May 4th you can pick up a free comic from your local comic dealer, the SCI FI Channel is producing postcards promoting the upcoming Farscape and Stargate SG-1 featuring art from famed comic artist Neal Adams.
Roswell bids farewell – UPN cancels
by Doc on Apr.10, 2002, under Television
UPN has officially cancelled the teen-alien show Roswell. It avoided the fate twice, first from a letter-writing campaign, and then again by jumping from WB to UPN, but alas htye mediocre ratings were not enough.
R to Q – Cleese takes over role
by Doc on Apr.09, 2002, under Movies
It’s official – John Cleese is the new Q of the Bond franchise. Cleese, in an interview for the Calgary Sun, said “I am Q now–I actually have a name.” Cleese debuted as “R”, Q’s assistant in The World is Not Enough, in 1999 when the ailing Desmond Llelewyn still had his long-standing role. But with Desmond’s passing that same year, there were some big (and booby-trapped) shoes to fill.
Dead senator to return in X2?
by Doc on Apr.08, 2002, under Movies
Proving that in sci-fi no one is ever permanently dead, it seems that there is a possibility that Senator Kelly (Bruce Davison), who was turned into a mutant and then a puddle of liquid, may make an appearance in the sequel X2. Not a whole lot of details, so as usual take with a grain of quadro-triticale.
Looks like no Rangers
by Doc on Apr.05, 2002, under Television
Everybody has been wondering about the status of Legend of the Rangers, with SCI FI Channel making announcements about mini-series and movies and such. Well, this just came from JMS: “The SciFi Channel has indicated that it’s moving away from space shows, with
all the hardware/alien stuff that goes with it. (This as per its recent
announcement about upcoming shows.)
So it looks like Rangers isn’t going to go ahead. They haven’t said it
directly, but networks never do.”
Registration problems
by Doc on Apr.04, 2002, under General News
I was kindly informed this morning that when registering an account, e-mail with the password wasn’t being received. I’ve hunted it down and fixed it, so now it will send e-mail out. If you have already registered and need the password, oo to the “Preferences” selection from the left menu, and click on the “Click here” next to “Lost your password?”.
Farscape: New Episodes Friday
by Doc on Apr.03, 2002, under Television
Anonymous Coward writes “From Scifi.com:
Farscape returns to SCI FI April 5 with the final four episodes of Season Three. These include (in airing order) 319: “I Yehsch, You Yehsch,” 320: “Into the Lion’s Den, Pt. 1,” 321: “Into the Lion’s Den, Pt. 2,” and 322: “Dog with Two Bones.”
Season Four begins June 7th.
Which is to say, about time!” Yeah, I’d say. It’s like their following the PTEN lead with the way Babylon 5 seasons were managed. I’m still trying to figure out how to get my TiVo through the Friday madness of shows to tape…
More SCI-FI miniseries – including Battlestar Galactica
by Doc on Apr.03, 2002, under Television
Today’s Test Pattern has scoops on a number of miniseries that have been green-lighted by the SCI FI Channel. Of note is “re-imagining” of Battlestar Galactica with Ronald D. Moore (MI:2) writing and Breck Eisner (Steven Spielberg’s Taken) directing. Not sure how this affects the possibly-defunct Singer/DeSanto project. Also in the works for mini-series: Myst, based on the computer game; The Forever War, based on the Hugo and Nebula-winning novel by Joe Haldeman; The Chronicles of Amber, based on Roger Zelazny’s 10-volume series; and The Seventh Day, a 7-hour series produced by Gary Sherman (First Wave).
