New Star Trek series coming???
by Doc on Oct.13, 2002, under Television
The first I heard of this was from Coming Attractions in their scoops about Star Trek: Nemesis: Apparently in the film Riker finally gets his command, and it was supposed to include a shot of the Galaxy-class U.S.S. Titan – well, apparently a new ship has now been designed instead, and possibly renamed to U.S.S. Mariner, AND may be the focal point of another series starring Riker and possibly some of the other Next Generation cast. All rumor at this point. Update: Link fixed…

It might be true, but…
Would they really want to dilute their “Enterprise” viewer ship right now? If you were the producer (or co-producer), and you could choose between paying a lot of money for the old cast, or getting a brand new cast for a lot less money and still have around the same number of viewers, which would you choose?
I’m not saying it’s not true, but it makes better sense to let Enterprise finish its run and then start with a whole new crew. We went from Star Trek to TNG just fine. Deep Space Nine was a hard one, but Voyager was great. Then came Enterprise, which is even better. If you can change, get fresh faces for less money, and still entertain people while putting a boat load of coin in your pocket, why change the formula?

Re:It might be true, but…
Well, part of the it is that the suits at Paramount are allegedly not happy with the ratings from Enterprise so far…but its still uncharacteristic of them – I don’t believe the other shows kit their stride right away either, and I’ve found Enterprise more interesting in its rookie season than the others. But, as Nemesis is ready NOW, and it will be several years to the next movie at least, the time to lay the groundwork for such a project is now…

Re:It might be true, but…
I’d also point out that if they are coming up with plot for a new series now it’ll probably be showing its premiere at about the same time as Enterprise series 3 is ending…
They also know the fans quite well by now. And if Enterprise viewing figures have been that disappointing (I don’t know why, I know a lot of people that’d watch it rather than DS9 any day), they possibly figure that its down to the hard core of fans who’s watch both anyway, and couldn’t be ‘diluted’.
Whichever way it goes, its bound to make a profit, because every channel worldwide that wants to show recent hit TV will want it ASAP.

Re:It might be true, but…
I sure’d want to “dilute” their Enterprise viewership. Perhaps they could prove they’re not just whores at paramount who will smear vaseline on their actresses for ratings and hopelessly despoil the Trek franchise.
Of course, it’s still possible that they are just whores.
