I’ve been working on setting up a whole new server over the weekend. I’ve already moved some stuff to it, including all of the Sci-Fi Storm Stores – gone are the annoying redirects to stores2.scifistorm.org:8000. This site will move as well, hopefully invisibly – except it should be a LOT faster than it was.
Whatever happened to Storm 2.0 you ask? It’s been on the backburner for quite a while, but I hope to get some traction on it soon. I’m actually re-thinking the whole platform, since I’ve got a need to learn Ruby anyways…or I may just break down and use something like Drupal and write my own modules for it.
The new Sci-Fi Movies Store has been given some more sections, for Blade Runner (with all its new versions), Lord Of The Rings, and a Harry Potter section with all the new releases – and re-releases – including both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Check out the different versions available – most will be released on December 11th.
Andre Braugher (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer), who plays a military man in the upcoming updated Andromeda Strain, discussed how the movie has been updated with SCI FI Wire. Obviously the setting has been updated to the present day, but he calls the book “anticlimactic”, and that the new version is a “retelling of the story, with the same premise, but an entirely different retelling.” I’m a bit concerned about the comment, “There are elements of that film Sphere [which was also based on a Crichton book], … in terms of the involvement of another power in the creation of the virus.” Did there need to be some nefarious higher power involved?
Looking for an X-Phile’s X-Mas gift? How about this whopping 61-disc X-Files – The Complete Collector’s Edition DVD set? Read More for the complete press release about this new package which includes all 9 seasons plus the feature film! Side note – I’m working on the Sci-Fi TV Store to include Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs where available, and finally split off movies into their own Sci-Fi Movies Store, but I still have more work to do…
Doctor Who – The Complete Third Series came out this week on DVD. We get a new companion, a new Christmas special, all new special features…more than enough to keep the Who fans busy while waiting for Series 4. Read More for the review – and for those who are waiting for the spinoff, Torchwood – Series 1 comes out on DVD in the U.S. in January.
Starting heating up your Holiday lists…lots of cool goodies are on their way. For fans of Middle Earth – no, still no high-def release of the movies, but for those who love Howard Shore’s music The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – The Complete Recordings comes out on November 20th. What’s so great about this release? Everything – and Read More for why…
While Josh Lucas may have been the rumored choice, Captain Christopher Pike, the captain of the Enterprise prior to James T. Kirk (and labeled as the first captain in the article, but I don’t know if they mean in terms of television production or Trek canon), will be played by Bruce Greenwood (I, Robot).
So, J.J. Abrams pitches an idea to Paramount brass – let’s do the original Star Trek crew, but when they are younger, before they all end up on the Enterprise. What’s the worst that could happen? Perhaps this. A humorous video on the pitch to redo Star Trek as a college life movie…
Martha Jones (played by Freema Agyeman) will return to the Doctor later in the upcoming 4th Series, and so will an even older acquaintance of the Doctor’s – the Sontarans. First seen with the 1973 story “The Time Warrior”, the bulbous warriors will have to face the Doctor, Jones, and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate, having taking the permanent companion role from Agyeman). Playing the head of the Sontarans is Christopher Ryan (Young Ones).
Scott Laming writes “AbeBooks has just posted an interview with Elizabeth Hand about her new book Generation Loss. There is also a contest (free to enter), with the chance to win a signed hardcover copy of the book“
