Extended Avatar on Blu-ray/DVD on November 16th

The extended version of Avatar now has a Blu-ray/DVD release date of November 16th in the U.S. (Nov. 15th internationally), and not only will it include the original theatrical release and the special edition re-release (including a family-friendly alternate audio track), but also a THIRD version of the film with another 16 minutes added, including an alternate opening scene on Earth! Warehouse 13 gets 3rd season

SyFy announced today that Warehouse 13 has been picked up for the 13-episode third season order, which will air some time in 2011. Also returning will be Executive Producer and showrunner Jack Kenny as part of a development deal. And I should have some details (or at least teasers 🙂 ) on the upcoming Warehouse 13 and Eureka holiday episodes early next week! Sarah Jane to answer question: How many Doctors can there be?

It’s a question as old as time – just how many times can the Doctor regenerate? We know the canonical answer – 12 – which dictates that there can only be 13 Doctors, and then he’s dead. But we also know that there are ways around it (the Time Lords offered the Master another regeneration, and he’s cheated it several times already). And, of course, it’s science fiction – they can just come up with something new. But it sounds like we will get a definitive answer – at least for the Doctor – in an upcoming episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures.
The two-part episode “Death of the Doctor” (to air as episodes 5 and 6), airing towards the end of this month in the U.K. (no U.S. airings are scheduled yet), is being written by Russell T. Davies and will feature Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, and the return of Jo Grant (Katy Manning), one of the Third Doctor’s companions. And among some teaser lines provided by Digital Spy (who saw a sneak peak), “The Doctor doesn’t have to be white. And he can regenerate more than 12 times – a lot more!”
Snyder to helm Superman

Warner Bros. has been trying to breath new life into Superman, after 2006’s Superman Returns failed to draw the heat to relaunch the franchise. Now after interviewing director candidates, the lottery winner is Zack Snyder (director of 300 and Watchmen), with Christopher Nolan (who also revived the Batman franchise) directing. From what is described so far, this won’t be another reboot exactly, and may even have tie-ins to the Richard Donner films, including having General Zod as the primary villain. Also expect a darker take on the character – Supes’ comic goodness was cited as a reason that the 2006 version didn’t connect with current audiences.
Stars announced for opening of Battlestar Galactica: The Exposition

Battlestar Galactica: The Exposition opens in a couple weeks (Oct. 22-24) at the Science Fiction Museum, and they’ve just announced the stars who will be appearing for the premiere weekend, including Edward James Olmos, Michael Hogan, Tahmoh Penikett, Richard Hatch, Kate Vernon, and producers Ronald D. Moore and Glen Larson. Read on for more details on additional events added as well.

What happened to the Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis movies?

So, what ever happened to the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis direct-to-DVD movies that we’ve been expecting? TV Death Ray has an interview with Brad Wright which covers a number of things, mainly about Stargate Universe, but also what happened. “The only thing that is blocking the SG-1 movie or the Atlantis movie, the only thing, is the fact that the direct-to-DVD market has gone away,” he said. “And, of course, there have been very big changes at MGM that kind of added to that.” Yeah, a company that can’t get an expected cash cow off the ground like The Hobbit probably isn’t going to front the money for direct-to-DVD features if they perceive the lack of a market. But don’t fret – “We have a plan B, and I’ve been talking with MGM about it, and hopefully we’ll still get our chance.”
Caprica returns tomorrow night – along with DVDs

The Hobbit union scrum could get government mediation

So, the ruckus between an Australian actor’s union operating in New Zealand and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit production, which resulted in “alerts” from other major acting unions to their membership to avoid the production, has drawn the attention of New Zealand’s prime minister, and is offering to have government officials mediate. Prime Minster John Key is concerned about the potential impact to the NZ film industry if the production moves elsewhere, likely to Eastern Europe. “If you can’t make ‘The Hobbit’ here, frankly, what movies are you going to make here?” he said.

Ok, I’ve got all the hookups seemingly working (I’m thinking of working a somewhat different interface for Facebook though), and Sci-Fi Storm is now on both Twitter and Facebook! The Hobbit possibly close to a green light, but fire at studio

The LA Times is reporting that Warner Bros./New Line and MGM are very close to giving the green light for production of The Hobbit, having resolved or nearly resolved remaining rights issues and finalized the necessary deals. If production starts by the 1st quarter of next year, then they could still hit their target of the first movie’s release for the 2012 holiday season, with the second a year later.
But now a fire apparently broke out at Portsmouth Miniatures Studio, one of the stage locations where The Hobbit was to be filmed. The cause of the fire is under investigation and the extent of damage is unknown.
