Stargate Universe mid-season preview: “Resurgence”

by on Nov.24, 2010, under Television

Is it mid-season already?

Rush, Colonel Young and the team debate chasing a distant energy signature into an area outside of the course mapped out by Destiny. Rush wants to investigate but it’s a day’s journey FTL to get there and Park, Eli, Dale and Brody question the wisdom of pursuing an energy signature so far off course from Destiny’s mission, not to mention the fact that the crew has had less than pleasant experiences with other alien life forms. What’s the source of this energy signature? Does the crew encounter more hostile aliens?

“Resurgence” airs Tuesday, November 30th, at 9PM ET/7PM CT.

Doctor Who reaches 47 years

by on Nov.23, 2010, under Television

The Doctor may be 907 years old (give or take – continuity is a problem with time travel…), but his show is 47 years old today. The very first episode of Doctor Who, “An Unearthly Child”, aired on the BBC on November 23rd, 1963 at 5:15PM GMT, running continuously for 26 years, [sfs=1083]a TV movie in 1996[/sfs], and has since been revived with 5 more series and several TV movies. What would be an appropriate drink to toast the Doctor?

Stargate: Resistance game will be discontinued

by on Nov.22, 2010, under Games

So it appears that the Stargate: Resistance game was not as immune after all to the fallout from the Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment bankruptcy and losing the license. According to the official web site (via Gateworld), Cheyenne can no longer sell the game – which was an online-only game. They will, however, continue access to those who already purchased the game through January 15th, 2011. But in reading the Gateworld article, things are far from clear of the overall state of things in general…

Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray review

by on Nov.21, 2010, under Video/DVD

Back in April I did a “live review” of Avatar on Blu-ray when the original version came out. Now there is an all new Blu-raw version, the [sfs=1069]Extended Collector’s Edition[/sfs] (also on [sfs=1070]DVD[/sfs], which not only includes the original theatrical release, but two more – the Special Edition re-release that includes 8 additional minutes, but a new extended cut with 16 additional minutes. And that’s just the first disc. There are two more discs chock full of extras that bring you into the creation of Pandora and the Na’vi.

“I told our team — let’s do the ultimate box set of Avatar, with everything in it the fans could possibly want. There’s an extended length cut that’s sixteen minutes longer, plus documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, artwork and over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. Everything worth putting into a special edition is in this set,” said James Cameron.

1996 Doctor Who TV movie on DVD February 8th

by on Nov.19, 2010, under Video/DVD

The 1996 Doctor Who TV movie (a.k.a. “The Enemy Within”), a joint effort between the BBC and Fox to revive the series starring Paul McGann, will [sfs=1083]finally get a Special Edition DVD release[/sfs] on February 8th, 2011. the movie follows the Doctor in San Francisco after his regeneration due to a gunshot wound, where he meets up with Dr. Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook), and pursues the Master (Eric Roberts), who has once again cheated death.

Alas, the movie created more questions and inconsistencies and didn’t really spawn the hoped for revival, but it has been absorbed into the accepted canon, earning McGann his status as the Eighth Doctor in the pantheon, and it did keep the Doctor on the minds of fans until the far more successful BBC attempt.
