At the MIPTV event in Cannes, BBC Worldwide Productions SVP Julie Gardner and actors John Barrowman and Bill Pullman are promoting the upcoming fourth series (content warning: adult language) of Torchwood, which is getting something of a makeover as part of the production moves to the U.S. – which includes a much bigger budget, thanks to the Starz network. According to Gardner the budget is triple what it was under just the BBC.
What does the bigger budget mean? “There is so much more we can do with Torchwood now having made the leap to America. It’s going to be even bigger and better,” according to star Barrowman. Big stunts and more sexual chemistry. “The audience is going to need a forklift truck to pick their jaws off the ground. The stunt work is unbelievable. I used to do quite a lot of stunts except if it was jumping off of buildings but now I’m not allowed to because of the insurance policy. I’m much more valuable in America!”
Will Smith will join his son Jaden (The Karate Kid) in front of the camera for an upcoming SF film co-written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. While no title was given, it may be the One Thousand A.E. project mentioned by the director in the fall while promoting The Last Airbender. Smith was originally tied in as a producer (and still is), along with his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, Shyamalan, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz (for Overbrook Entertainment, Smith and Lassiter’s production company).
What little is known of the plot: “The story takes place far in the future where a young boy has to navigate an abandoned planet on a space ship that has crashed. On board is his estranged father.”
Just a programming reminder – tonight on Syfy is both the season finale of breakout hit Being Human at 9PM ET (see our sneak peek), followed by the return of Dr. Rodney McKay to the Stargate franchise in a guest appearance on Stargate Universe at 10PM ET (we also have a sneak peek of that).
Update: Yes, I screwed up…I counted wrong plus something else I read resulted in me confusing when the Being Human season finale is – that’s NEXT week…
The future of Camelot is at stake. Morgause has destructively stolen the Cup of Life and has created her own immortal army of soldiers to aid her in her quest of becoming the Queen of Camelot. However, Morgana, having her own wicked motives, takes her place on the throne against the will of Uther. Arthur, Merlin and the rest of King Uther’s men must fight against the evil Morgause and twisted Morgana in this final episode to regain their rule over their crumbling kingdom. Be sure to watch the clip where Arthur knights the men of the most noble army the world has ever known and tune in on Friday at 10/9c only on Syfy!
Reminder: This is the Series 3 finale!
