There are two Snow White-based movies coming out soon – Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman and Relativity Media’s Mirror Mirror (the title was just released two weeks ago). And now their are trailers out for both.
Snow White and the Huntsman takes a serious, dark look at the fairy tale, where the evil queen (Charlize Theron) must consume the heart of Snow White (Kristen Stewart) to remain the loveliest and live forever. So she hires a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to kill her and bring back her heart. Not a movie to take your young kids to.

Mirror Mirror is a vastly different movie – definitely meant as a comedy, evoking The Princess Bride. If anything, Huntsman is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves to Mirror‘s Robin Hood: Men In Tights – at least according to the trailer:
As you can see, in this version Julia Roberts is the frustrated and financially challenged evil queen, vs. Lily Collins’ “bandit” Snow White, who joins up with a band of dwarves to get back at the queen and try and break Prince Andrew (Armie Hammer) of the queen’s spell, with additional comic relief from Nathan Lane as Brighton, the queen’s servant.
Is this a more kid-friendly movie? At first view it seems so. But original descriptions of the movie called it a “dark twist”, so it remains to be seen as we get closer to the release.
Mirror Mirror will get the head start, slated for a March 16th, 2012 release, while Snow White and the Huntsman will release on June 1st, 2012.
