Fancy the idea of taking up arms against some of your favorite heroes from SF film and television? Or fancy a blaster fight with a squad of Stormtroopers led by General Motti? (Hey, at least that last one should be easy…we know how well Stormtroopers shoot!)
Well, you might have your chance at Comicpalooza, in Houston May 25-27!
“The next best thing to being a sci-fi or action hero has to be shooting a sci-fi or action hero with a gun. Or maybe being shot by one,” says John Simons, founder and Chairman of Comicpalooza, the Texas International Comic Con. At least that’s the premise that led to the Badass Celebrity Smackdown, in which fans attending Comicpalooza May 25-27 will get their chance to pit themselves against stars of some of the biggest sci-fi and action franchises in Hollywood while helping US veterans at the same time.
Defiance continues to get cast added…Deadline reports that actresses Mia Kirshner and Fionnula Flanagan have join the cast.
Kirshner (The Vampire Diaries, The L Word) has been cast as Kenya, the “self-assured, dauntless town madam whose unvarying devotion to the town of Defiance has inexorably woven her into many of its complicated affairs.”
Flanagan (Lost, The Others) will play Nikki, the “popular ex-mayor of the town whose intrinsic expertise from her years on the job have made her a trusted mentor to her successor, Amanda (Julie Benz).”
Production is expected to start shortly in Toronto. For more information about the TV/massively-multiplayer online game crossover, see our original announcement.
I learned of this directly from writer/director/producer Kenneth D. Barker: On the Shoulders of Giants is an independently produced British 1950s-style retro sci-fi film to be released this summer that he calls a “subtle homage to Forbidden Planet.” Check out the full description and trailer below.
TNT and Dark Horse Digital have already made their digital comic for the second season of Falling Skies available at the official web site, and follows what happens to to the 2nd Mass in between seasons 1 and 2, while they are holed up in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Check out a couple of the images below!
TNT’s epic drama Falling Skies, basic cable’s number-one new series of last year, chronicles the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. Season two will premiere with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, June 17, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
IMAX and Lionsgate announced today that The Hunger Games will return to over 100 IMAX theaters for one week starting April 27th, due to overwhelming demand.
The Hunger Games has grossed over $533 million globally since its launch on March 23, including $13.2 million generated from IMAX theatres in its original one week run.
“It’s wonderful that so many fans have expressed interest in seeing The Hunger Games in the immersive IMAX format, and many of these are repeat viewers,” said Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group Co-Chair Rob Friedman, adding “We’re delighted that IMAX has been able to accommodate them through this special one week re-engagement.”
“The Hunger Games has become a cultural phenomenon and we are thrilled to provide moviegoers with another opportunity to see this year’s most successful film in IMAX,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment.
The IMAX release of The Hunger Games has been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
Here is another sneak peek for tonight’s new episode of Grimm which airs at 9/8c on NBC!
Shortly after I posted that the Hunger Games sequel search was down to two, apparently they made their choice – and it is Francis Lawrence, who previously directed Water for Elephants, I Am Legend and Constantine. It is expect he will receive an offer today.
Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games, is slated for a November 2013 release. It is expected the third book, Mockingjay, will be filmed at the same time.
Hearing from various sources that the necessarily quick search for a replacement director for Gary Ross – who decided not to continue with the sequel for The Hunger Games – has been narrowed down to two choices, neither of which have a lot of top-line directing titles under their belts but what they have were well known: Bennett Miller, who was nominated for an Oscar for Capote and more recently directed Moneyball; and Francis Lawrence, who most recently scored with Water for Elephants but also genre films I Am Legend and Constantine.
Of the two, Lawrence would seem to make sense given his experience in a post-apocalyptic-like setting of I Am Legend, and 2 genre films to zero for Miller.
Syfy’s Hollywood Treasure, which follows collectibles expert Joe Maddalena finding and auctioning pop culture items, returns for a third season on Tuesday, May 22nd at 10/9c – and it will open up with a trip to Middle-Earth with Samwise Gamgee! Or at least, actor Sean Astin’s collection from The Lord of the Rings!
Upcoming season three episodes will showcase the Whitney Houston costume from The Bodyguard; the house in American Horror Story; items from the television series Lost; the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard; the original camera George Lucas used to film Star Wars and Maddalena’s personal Holy Grail – the lost pair of ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz.
Eliza Dushku will take on the role of She-Hulk in the upcoming series, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.…but before your chants of “Rawr!” go overboard, this is an animated series, and she is only providing her voice! Although, I can say, the preview image of She-Hulk is Rawr-worthy…in addition, Adrian Pasdar (Heroes), who voices Iron Man for Ultimate Spider-Man, says that his Iron Man will also make a guest appearance.
