Star Wars Rebels, new animated series to debut in 2014

by on May.20, 2013, under Television

Now we know what Dave Filoni has been working on since the announced ending of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. We knew it was a new animated series, and we knew it would be set at a time “untouched” so far in the movies and TV shows.

Star Wars Rebels will debut in the fall of 2014, starting as a one hour special on the Disney Channel, then as a series on Disney XD.

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV — an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD’s viewers.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. “I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars.”

Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date. More information about this developing project will be found on StarWars.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/starwarsrebels.

Star Wars Weekends have started at Disney’s Hollywood Studios – and this year, not only is the “Carbon-Freeze Me” back, but they’ve added a new one, and this one looks even better – you can have your head scanned and be made into a Stormtrooper figurine!

Inside The Magic’s Ricky Brigante is planning on doing it again this year…can’t wait to see the results! And follow us on Twitter as we’ll be there in a few weeks, and we’ll be taking lots of pictures, and perhaps see a few friends as well!

Update: Watch as Ricky gets his face scanned! Alas, production and delivery will take until July, so we’ll follow up with the results – but they look quite detailed.

Warehouse 13 renewed for final season of six episodes

by on May.16, 2013, under Television

Word began to spread that Warehouse 13 must have been renewed when a union web site listed under their “Current Productions” “Warehouse 13 (final)”, with production dates of June 24th-Aug 20th, at the studio location in Toronto – but what was interesting is that isn’t enough time for even a 13 episode season.

Now it appears that Syfy has renewed it for a final season of only six episodes, according to Deadline [Doc: This is confirmed now – see below]. This is better than nothing, of course, and as far as it being the final season, it’s not surprising given the show’s apparent bubble status. At least we should get a good wrap up.

But I can’t help but think about what happened with Eureka, where an apparent 6th and final season of six episodes was planned, and then canceled

Update 5/17: Syfy has confirmed the order for 6 episodes for a final season to air in 2014. From the press release:

David Eick takes over Falling Skies; Season 2 on DVD/Blu-ray June 4th

by on May.16, 2013, under Television

Former Battlestar Galactica and Caprica executive producer David Eick is taking over the reins of Falling Skies from Remi Aubuchon as showrunner.

What is somewhat interesting is that Eick is taking over production for Season 4 – which has not been greenlit yet, with Season 3 set to debut on June 9th. Eick is expected to get together a writing squad for Season 4 right away in anticipation of pickup, due to the long production cycle of the show. But it is fully expected to get that Season 4 order, being the top scripted show on TNT with the younger demos, and also being fully owned by TNT, which means TNT gets all the income from international sales as well.

Aubuchon, who worked with Eick on Caprica, is leaving after serving in the role for two seasons.

Falling Skies Season 2Also, Season 2 of Falling Skies hits shelves and doorsteps on June 4th on [sfs=1316]Blu-ray[/sfs] and [sfs=1317]DVD[/sfs]. You can also check out our Sci-Fi TV Store for previous seasons and Amazon Instant Video availability.
