The CW has released the first full-body picture of star Grant Gustin decked out as his superhero alter ego for the upcoming spin-off pilot The Flash.

Filming will presumably start soon on the pilot, a spin-off of The CW’s Arrow, soon. Originally this was envisioned as a back-door pilot directly from an episode of Arrow at the end of the current season, but it was decided that the origin story deserved its own pilot and was separated. Gustin appeared in a couple episodes of Arrow already as Barry Allen, and was injured/irradiated in an explosion in that show.

The Flash will also star Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order) and Tom Cavanagh (Ed) as well as 1990’s The Flash star John Wesley Shipp in an unknown role.

Deadline reports today that Fredrick Pohl’s classic SF novel [asin=0345475836]Gateway[/asin] is being adapted as a drama series for TV by Entertainment One Television and De Laurentiis Co.

De Laurentiis has been watching the rights for Gateway for a while, and pursued it aggressively when it became available, always with the idea of it being a TV series as opposed to a feature film. “Television gives us the opportunity of exploring the rich world of the novel and the complexity of its characters,” executive producer Martha De Laurentiis said. De Laurentiis has a long history with novel adaptations, with the 1984 massive Dune the best known.

Gateway revolves around a space station discovered inside an asteroid built by an alien race called the Heechee, who have long since disappeared. Humans struggle to learn the technology left behind, with little success. Among the abandoned equipment are approximately one thousand small starships, capable of taking one, three, or five crewmembers on a potentially highly profitable journey – but incredibly dangerous, as while they have figured out how to select a destination, they have no idea how long it will take to get there, in which case starvation is entirely possible, or what other dangers they may face along the way or when they arrive. Many never return, but for the chance of untold riches many volunteer. Robinette Broadhead is one of them, having one a lottery to make enough money for a one-way trip to Gateway, and the chance for more. He returns very rich – and very haunted…

Gateway won the 1977 Nebula Award and 1978 Hugo, Locus and John W. Campbell Memorial Awards for Science Fiction Best Novel.

Almost a year after it gave a pilot order for Line of Sight, a science fiction drama that was to star The Walking Dead‘s Governor David Morrissey, the network decided to pass on making it a series, according to Deadline.

We’re still not sure what made the show science fiction exactly – presumably it would be unveiled as they story went, but we’d watch Morrissey again. I might also add that he played eponymous “Next Doctor” in the 2008 Christmas episode of Doctor Who.

The genre curse lives on – it seemed as if Gravity had a decent shot at breaking the the curse that no science fiction or fantasy film has ever won the Academy Award for Best Picture, especially after director Alfonso Cuarón won Best Director (but don’t tell him we’re calling Gravity science fiction – he doesn’t think it is) – and it’s somewhat rare for Best Director and Best Picture to not go to the same film. But it wasn’t to be, as the Best Picture nod went to 12 Years A Slave, which itself was a likely winner for either award as well. But it did come away with 6 statues, including Best Director, Original Score, Film Editing, Cinematography, Sound Editing, and Visual Effects.
