Syfy renews Ghost Hunters and Paranormal Witness

by on Oct.29, 2014, under Television

On the heals of their 200th episode last week and the finale of the ninth season (by Syfy reckoning) just tonight, Syfy has announced it has picked up a 13-episode 10th season of the hit paranormal investigation series Ghost Hunters to air in 2015. At he same time they announced a fourth season of 13 episodes of fellow paranormal series Paranormal Witness.

“We couldn’t be more excited about entering a brand new decade of paranormal investigations with Jason Hawes, a refreshed TAPS team and Ghost Hunters,” said Heather Olander, SVP, alternative series development and production for Syfy. “We also eagerly anticipate the return of a revitalized and scarier than ever Paranormal Witness: True Terror, which features shocking firsthand accounts of truly frightening and skin-crawling supernatural experiences – including the real-life story of the hit movie, The Conjuring.”

To date, Season 9 of Ghost Hunters has averaged 1.7 million total viewers, 841,000 viewers in Adults 18-49 and 983,000 viewers in Adults 25-54 (all data Live +7). The two-hour, 200th reunion episode, which aired October 22, was watched by 1.3 million total viewers and was the #1 unscripted show of the night among Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 (all data Live +SD).

Season 3 of Paranormal Witness delivered 1.47 million total viewers, 782,000 Adults 18-49 and 833,000 Adults 25-54 (all data Live +7). The season, which aired in 2013, ranked as Syfy’s #3 most-watched unscripted series.

As a highlight of Syfy’s annual 31 Days of Halloween programming, the Ghost Hunters season finale (airing Tonight – Wednesday, October 29 at 9PM ET/PT) features a special Halloween investigation at the Cincinnati Music Hall in Ohio, where reported hauntings are as frequent as the performances. With paranormal activity said to spike at 3AM, the TAPS team is on high alert to see if they can capture evidence that shores up the claims of those who’ve experienced hauntings at the Hall.

The episode is also the final one for investigators Amy Bruni, Adam Berry and Britt Griffith.

Ghost Hunters is produced for Syfy by Craig Piligian’s Pilgrim Studios (Fast N’ Loud, Street Outlaws, The Ultimate Fighter). Piligian, Mike Nichols, Thomas Thayer and Alan David serve as executive producers.

Report: Benedict Cumberbatch tagged for Doctor Strange

by on Oct.27, 2014, under Comics, Movies

As Disney/Marvel continue to mine the comic giant’s deep field of characters, next up in the production slate of “Phase 2” (outside the Avengers set) is Doctor Strange, and most recently the lead actor being talked to was Joaquin Phoenix. That died earlier this month, so it was back to the drawing board – and Deadline now reports that their choice for the role is none other than everyone’s pick for every role, Benedict Cumberbatch (who honestly seems like a much better fit to us anyways.) Negotiations are expected to start soon.

The character of Doctor Strange is a former egotistical neurosurgeon who after becoming severely injured in a car crash to the point he could no longer conduct surgery and falls into bankruptcy trying to repair his hands, finds his way tho a hermit known only as the Ancient One – who after a selfless act by Strange teaches him the mystic arts. Strange then becomes the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

Charles Dance will play Overlord Karellen in Syfy’s Childhood’s End

by on Oct.27, 2014, under Television

Syfy and Universal Cable Productions today announced that Emmy nominee Charles Dance, whose numerous credits include Game of Thrones, Phantom of the Opera, Jewel in the Crown and Bleak House, will play the lead role of the alien Overlord “Karellen” in the upcoming six-hour miniseries Childhood’s End.

Adapted from Arthur C. Clarke’s classic novel, Childhood’s End will premiere on Syfy in 2015. Childhood’s End follows the peaceful invasion of Earth by the mysterious Overlords. Karellen (Dance), the ambassador for the Overlords, makes first contact with Earthling Ricky Stormgren. Karellen’s comforting words and amazing technological gifts quickly win humanity’s favor, beginning decades of apparent utopia at the cost of human identity and culture. However, his refusal to reveal his physical appearance and insistence on dealing only through Ricky have some people questioning whether his intentions are truly benevolent.

In making the announcement, Bill McGoldrick, Executive Vice President, Original Content, Syfy, said: “We are thrilled that Charles has picked Childhood’s End following his amazing work in Game of Thrones.”

Akiva Goldsman (Lone Survivor, A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend) and Mike DeLuca (Captain Philips, Moneyball, The Social Network) will serve as executive producers. Alissa Phillips (Moneyball, Mob City) is co-executive producer. Childhood’s End will be adapted by Matthew Graham (creator of BBC’s Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes). Universal Cable Productions will be the studio.

The miniseries will be directed by Nick Hurran, who received an Emmy Award nomination for Sherlock and a Hugo Award nomination for Doctor Who.
