Tennant, Tate and Barrowman sing goodbyes to Doctor Who producers Davies and Gardner
by Doc on Nov.02, 2011, under Television
Here is a neat video – when Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner stepped down from producing Doctor Who at the end of David Tennant’s run as the Doctor, Tennant, Catherine Tate and John Barrowman said – or rather sang – their goodbyes to the pair, with a song about how the two brought back the series and overcame so many obstacles…
Ron Howard still working on The Dark Tower, but not set up yet
by Doc on Nov.02, 2011, under Movies, Television
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Ron Howard discussed his upcoming Formula One racing-based movie Rush, but also discussed a bit about the state of The Dark Tower: “We are continuing to work on the script to find ways to make the budget more manageable and still deliver the work in a way that the project deserves,” he said. “We were always racing and fast-tracking the project, so I always wince when I see something written about it and there’s a release date in there. These kinds of projects often take years to come together in the right ways. But I am in love with the material, and the minute it can come together in the right way, I am fully committed to it.”
Not sure how this goes along with the related TV series reportedly finding a network – hopefully we will get more clarity soon – but Howard certainly seems committed to bringing it to the screen.

Logan’s Run remake gets yet another writer in Baldwin
by Doc on Nov.01, 2011, under Movies
Yes, apparently the long, long developing Logan’s Run is still moving, albeit glacially…but the latest news is that relative newcomer Andrew Baldwin (he has written the screenplays for The West is Dead and Red Asphalt, although neither has been produced yet) has been tasked with working on the script. This follows Alex Garland, who wrote the original script and Will Beall who recently did a re-write after Nicolas Winding Refn came on board as director last February. Ryan Gosling is reportedly still signed to star, but no word on a production start yet, which is likely to be next Spring at the earliest.

Matt Smith isn’t done yet with Doctor Who
by Doc on Oct.27, 2011, under Television
Pretty much as expected, Matt Smith countered last week’s rumor he was leaving Doctor Who after the next series (which suddenly exploded earlier this week with various sites saying he “confirmed” it, referencing the same report). I love playing this role, and I don’t want to give it up anytime soon,” he said. “I feel very lucky. In the current climate for actors, I’d never say, ‘This is too much’ – quite the opposite, in fact. I’d say, ‘Bring it on’.”
Again, it looks like more was read into his earlier statement than was intended. Still, it doesn’t mean that he’s under contract any longer than the next series either, so the future remains unclear…

The Dark Tower may have found a TV outlet at HBO
by Doc on Oct.25, 2011, under Movies, Television
The off-and-on The Dark Tower project, based on the Stephen King book series, may have found a home for the TV portion of the multi-media production, according to an interview that Brian Grazer gave to MTV News. Reportedly going through a budget-slimming process after Universal balked at the price tag for a “3 movie and 2 TV series” plan (Grazer says they’ve already cut $45 million), at least the TV portion may land at HBO. “We’re going to do [‘The Dark Tower’] with HBO,” according to Grazer. “We’ll do the TV with HBO, and we’ll do the movie with… to be determined. We’ll do it right.”
No confirmation has come from HBO yet, but given that HBO greenlighted the ambitious Game of Thrones to excellent results, perhaps they can see the benefits beyond the risks. Meanwhile, Deadline reports that there is no deal actually in place.
