Mini-Review: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
by Doc on Jul.21, 2003, under Books
I actually finished it a while ago, but I’m finally typing in a mini-review for the fifth and largest of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In summation, I think it is probably the best book of all 5, even though it pretty much crams in every character ever mentioned before that wasn’t dead, but that didn’t stop Nearly-Headless Nick anyways…

Nick Pollotta writes “Good evening,
This is just a short note to let folks know that the contracts have finally been signed, and we’re good to go with “That Darn Squid God!”.
Synopsis: In 1880 London, two gentleman explorers from the International British Museum for Stolen Antiquities, race around the world, and against the clock, to try and stop the return of a prehistoric demon grimly determined to, well, eat the entire Human Race.
This brand new Fantasy/Humor novel, written by myself and James Clay, will be coming out August 2003 from Wildside Press in both hardback (with a lovely dustjacket), and in trade paperback.
A couple of sample chapters are posted on my web page.
Best wishes,

“Without humor, there is no civilization.”” Hmm, Squid God, eating the human race – sounds like Cthulhu to me. :^) Nick has several highly rated SF&F/Humor books out.
Editorial Review of The Neutrino Effect
by Doc on Dec.13, 2002, under Books
Jon Casper writes “EDITORIAL REVIEW
The familiar theme of alien invasion is treated in author Michael Kirshteyn?s THE NEUTRINO EFFECT with refreshing optimism and a sure-handed style. Told from the point of view of a Russian Scientist entrepreneur named Vladimir Ustinov, the story takes place in a future some seventy years from now, in which the author speculates that peace among the nations may not be such an outrageous concept.” Read Moe for the rest…

Lucifer’s Hammer, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
by Doc on Jun.18, 2002, under Books
Most of you have seen Armageddon – and probably a few of you like me scoffed at the realism. You’ve probably seen Deep Impact with a somewhat more realistic portrayal. Well, neither hold a candle to Lucifer’s Hammer, probably the most realistic portrayal of any “big rock hits Earth” movie. Read More.
Review: Niven/Pournelle’s The Mote in God’s Eye and The Gripping Hand
by Doc on May.24, 2002, under Books
I just recently read both The Mote in God’s Eye, followed by the sequel The Gripping Hand, written some 18 years later. For my first foray into a non-Known Space Niven work, I was very impressed with the former, a little less so with the latter. Read More for more details – but beware of spoilers.

Man-Kzin Wars IX out in hardcover
by Doc on Jan.26, 2002, under Books
I can’t believe this fell under my radar. Just as I thought I was getting close to completing the Encyclopedia of Known Space, Known Space just got larger. Man-Kzin Wars IX has been released in hardcover, with 4 new stories from Poul Anderson (his last published story), Hal Colebatch, Paul Chafe, and Larry Niven himself. I though all I had left was VIII, and then some mop-up of missing stories. If anyone has a copy of MKW IV they are willing to sell (reasonably!), let me know. Head on over to the Bookstore of Known Space to see other titles.
