Pirates plunders; sets records

Disney must be ecstatic. The sequel Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest, broke both the single-day opening record with $55 million (Star Wars Episode III had opened at $50M), but whalloped previous weekend weekend record holder Spider-Man ($114.8M) with an estimated take of $132M. Even producer Jerry Bruckheimer didn’t figure on that much, expecting something closer to The Da Vinci Code ($77M).
Two trilogies on the way from Cameron

James Cameron plans to keep busy. He’s got two planned trilogies in the pipeline. First up is the long-rumored “Project 880”, which is currently title Avatar, but that may change. All that is mentioned about it is a “planet-hopping future”. Then there is the Battle Angel franchise, based on the popular manga series. He plans to make the first movie of each first, and if one or both makes money, continue with them.
Transformers teaser online

JMS project The Changeling picked up by Universal/Imagine

Variety is reporting (read the story on SCI FI Wire – Variety wants a lot of money to read it) stating that a thriller from J. Michael Straczynski called The Changeling has been purchased by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, for Imagine heads Ron Howard (director) and Brian Grazer (producer), and is on the short list for Howard’s next big project. It’s about a mother who’s kidnapped son returns in answer to her prayers, but suspects the boy that returned is not the same. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox suprised exhibitors at Cine Expo in Amsterdam by saying the X-Men spinoff movie Wolverine will hit theaters in 2007.

Young Kirk == Matt Damon?

Reporter Marc S. Malkin for the syndicated TV tabloid The Insider is reporting in his Star Bytes online column that producer J.J. Abrams, who is developing the Star Trek prequel film, is eying Matt Damon (Syriana) as the young James T. Kirk. The interesting thing is, I can kind of see it. Reportedly William Shatner has given his blessing.
