Moffat on Doctor Who 50th: Can’t be “about looking backwards”
by Doc on Mar.21, 2013, under Television
The new Entertainment Weekly features two different covers for Doctor Who (see them here, courtesy of Blogtor Who), but the more interesting bit came from the article inside, in which producer Steven Moffat was quoted as saying about the upcoming 50th Anniversary, “We can’t make this all about looking backwards. It’s actually got to be the start of a new story.”
This appears to be in relation to the desire among fans to have something like “The Eleven Doctors” special, featuring all living Doctors and somehow accommodating the deceased ones as well. But that’s a tall order to try and squeeze into an episode – even a super-sized one. But reading in to it more, I’m wondering about “…a new story.” Would a 50th Anniversary episode be used to kick off something new? Like, perhaps, a rumored new Doctor?!?

A new Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future series is in development
by Doc on Mar.18, 2013, under Television
Could the cult favorite SF kids show Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, known for having a deep, intense stories despite being seen as a toy marketing gimmick, make a comeback 25 years since it debuted in 1987?
It seems so, as the people involved spoke with the folks over at io9. The new show, however, will be a more adult-oriented 60-minute show, compared to the original 30-minute kids show.
Long time readers of Sci-Fi Storm are probably already asking – is J. Michael Straczynski, who wrote many of the most memorable episodes, involved in the show? Apparently not, according to producer Roger Lay, who says that JMS told him and other producers that’s he’s happy with what he’s already done with the show in the 80s. JMS was always the biggest cheerleader for the show over the years, being involved in the [asin=B005OZJE8K]DVD release[/sfs] in 2011, and outlines a trilogy of feature films, but the producers didn’t want to go that route, and JMS wasn’t interested in going back to the episodic format.
But anyways, this has the potential to be a great SF show, and they’ve already got a script from the team of Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens (Star Trek: Enterprise, Primeval: The New World) and they’ve begun shopping it around internationally, with at least one network very interested.

Hey –
I hope your week went well. I’m doing better; and, I’m so happy that Nora & I have made peace. It was getting a little hairy for awhile there (no wolf-pun intended).

Defiance – this may be the show you’ve been waiting for
by Doc on Mar.12, 2013, under Television
This may just be the show you’ve been waiting for from Syfy. Aliens. Spaceships. Frontier justice. Interesting characters. Monster bugs. Bullets. Energy weapons. An alien world – that just happens to be Earth in 30 years.
Let me set the stage for you…in April 2013, gigantic alien ships appear in the skies above Earth. on board are the refugees of the Votanis star system – binary star system that gave rise to a number of intelligent races that was destroyed 5,000 years ago. These Votans, as they are collectively called, escaped their system aboard these Arks – giant ships on board which they slept for thousands of years en route to a suitable planet on which they could terraform and live – which they did not expect to be inhabited.
For years, negotiations between the Votans and humans dragged on, with distrust of both sides. Eventually some 10 years later, the U.N. grants a large amount of land in Brazil to the Votans, but when a human assassin kills a Votan representative, everything falls apart and the Pale Wars begin – a series of global conflicts that lasted for 9 more years.
Towards the end of the war, all of the Votan Arks are mysteriously destroyed in orbit. But this results in not only debris from the Arks crashing to Earth, but also the terra-spires – giant terraforming devices that wreak havoc and forever change the the landscape, flora and fauna of the Earth.
