Pitch to be made for new Star Trek series?

by on Aug.26, 2011, under Television

Many have tried, none have succeeded: With such heavy hitters are Bryan Singer, William Shatner and JMS supposedly associated with Star Trek series that went nowhere, does a small production company stand a chance? We’ll see, as David Foster of 1947 Entertainment, which has a number of things in development, is apparently readying a pitch to CBS for a post-Voyager series in the old continuity, according to this interview with owner David Foster.

Interestingly, this series has been in development since 2006 under the code name S.E.T.I. (the acronym used by the real-life Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence project), between David Foster and the late Kevin Severson.

So it will be interesting to see if given the J.J. Abrams “new continuity” if there is room for a TV series in the “old continuity”.

Malcolm McDowell, Nicholas Lea and more in Syfy’s Philadelphia Experiment

by on Aug.25, 2011, under Television

James Hibberd reports (and Syfy confirms) that actors Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Star Trek: Generations, Entourage), Nicholas Lea (V, Kyle XY), Michael Paré (Virgin Suicides, The Philadelphia Experiment), Gina Holden (Saw 3D, Final Destination, Flash Gordon), along with Ryan Robbins and Emilie Ullerup from Syfy’s Sanctuary, have joined the cast of Syfy’s update to The Philadelphia Experiment.

Based on the urban legend that an experiment in radar masking conducted by the U.S. Navy not only rendered the U.S.S. Eldridge invisible but actually temporarily transported it elsewhere, and was previously made into a 1984 movie (which starred Paré), Syfy’s remake updates it for the present day. Lea is the hero in this version, with Paré as a henchman for the film’s villain, and McDowell as the chief scientist of the original experiment.

It is expected to air in 2012.

The 7th series of Doctor Who WILL all air in 2012

by on Aug.24, 2011, under Television

Remember the reports that the 7th series of Doctor Who wouldn’t all be shown in 2012, or hat budget constraints would reduce the number of episodes? Well, as part of a larger interview with The Daily Beast, executive producer Steven Moffat addressed that very specifically: “Absolute nonsense. First of all, we are airing in 2012. The only thing that’s happening is that we’re moving a bit later…There’s lots of reasons for that that will become clear quite soon…It is certainly not a reduced episode count. Do you think the BBC would really let that happen? With an average audience of 10 million?…Doctor Who’s international profile is huge. It’s never been more successful. You’re not going to reduce a show like this. The opposite is going to happen, in fact.”

Advanced look at next Monday’s Alphas: “Catch and Release”

by on Aug.19, 2011, under Television

The Sci-Fi Storm time tunnel brought me back something from the near future – next Monday’s episode of Alphas, “Catch and Release”, with special guest star Summer Glau…no, I can’t let you watch it – blah, blah, causality violations, blah, blah, temporal police…but I can tell you a bit about it, hopefully at least major spoiler-free.

Summer Glau guest stars in Alphas: "Catch and Release"

Summer Glau plays Skylar Adams, an Alpha who’s ability is to basically take apart anything and create something new rapidly out of whatever is available – like a device which incapacitates those near it, or highly complex electronics. Dr. Rosen and Nina know her, and she has been left alone as a non-threat – but now she is on the run and it seems like she may be working for someone, so the Alphas team needs to find her – and decided if they need to stop her – or protect her…in the meantime, Gary’s mother, after finding out what he’s been doing, tells Dr. Rosen Gary is sick, and keeps him home with the intention of never letting him go back.

More Babylon 5 – or not? Apparently “not”

by on Aug.18, 2011, under Television

I feel like I’m being teased (I wrote the Babylon 5 Encyclopedia in the 90s as one of my first personal web projects), but Walter Koenig, who played the Psi-Cop Bester on the show (and is better know for his role of Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek) was at the big Las Vegas Star Trek convention earlier this week, and he told TrekMovie.com that JMS is negotiating the rights back for Babylon 5.

Now, recently JMS posted on Facebook that there were some plans for Babylon 5 with Warner Bros (who own the rights), but that it didn’t seem to be moving. But, “At this point, I’ve told the studio that if this isn’t going to move ahead, there’s something else they need to consider and there’s a very informal negotiation going on now in that regard. We’ll see where it goes from there.” That seems like he might be asking for them to sell the rights to him so that he might be able to take it in a new direction. Seems like an unusual move, but we’re certainly not against more B5 in any form…

Well, JMS tweeted in the wee hours (well, probably late hours for him), and it’s not happening: “Walter misspoke: I am not in negotiations with WB to develop more Babylon 5.” So perhaps the “something else” fell through.
