FX orders Star Trek spoof, Alabama
by Doc on Aug.03, 2010, under Television
FX has ordered a supposed Star Trek spoof from the makers of cop reality spoof Reno 911. Entitled Alabama, the show follows the crew of the – you guessed it – U.S.S. Alabama on a seven year mission to maintain interplanetary peace. And like Reno, it is expected to be part improvised. No stars have been mentioned.
New shows from Syfy
by Doc on Aug.02, 2010, under Television
Syfy has released its slate of new scripted (whoa!) shows, and surprisingly some of these could work – or they could just be seen as knockoffs. Check them out and let us know which ones you think will work. I don’t know about the self-spoofing shows involving Lee Majors or Kevin Sorbo, with the latter’s Legendary essentially Galaxy Quest but using Sorbo’s own background. Zeros could be the most original, although it follows in the footsteps of zombie comedy movies Shaun Of The Dead and Zombieland.
Galactica web series “Blood & Chrome” to follow Cylon War
by Doc on Jul.28, 2010, under Television
Syfy is currently developing a new web series spinoff of Battlestar Galactica called “Blood & Chrome”. Although it is not yet received a green light, it is planned to run from 9-10 episodes of 9-10 minutes each (making it about the length of a TV movie…), it would follow the young William Adama during the Cylon War. It will be “about a young man’s initiation into war: both the realities of war as fought by soldiers on the ground (and in Battlestars and Vipers), and the somewhat less real version portrayed in the media,” according to co-exec producer Michael Taylor. They will also take a page from Sanctuary using virtual sets – and maybe it will also take another page from Sanctuary and make the move to television…
Comic-Con: Chuck‘s mom, whoda Hulk; Starbuck
by Doc on Jul.25, 2010, under Comics, Conventions, Television
A couple more tidbits (probably the last, until the chaos is digested): Chuck is gonna get a mom – and she is more than a match for his Dad, Scott Bakula – none other than Terminator-killer Linda Hamilton. Gone-toting bad-ass mercenary mom, anyone? Also, the “Guess who (or Who) is now over, with Mark Ruffalo getting the role for the upcoming The Avengers feature. And finally, Ronald D. Moore spoke about what Starbuck was: although intentionally left nebulous (the more specific he got when writing, “the less interesting she became”) Moore saw her as a godlike entity but didn’t like to be called God, having gone through a resurrection of sorts.
Comic-Con: No more Family Guy Star Wars spoofs
by Doc on Jul.24, 2010, under Conventions, Television
Some more tidbits: Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane said that they will not do another Star Wars spoof after the upcoming Return Of The Jedi spoof (of which a preview was shown). “This last one almost killed us,”, MacFarlane said, saying that doing them was “too expensive”. However, Indy might get the treatment in the future…
Some more tidbits from Comic-Con: Caprica, Stargate Universe
by Doc on Jul.24, 2010, under Conventions, Television
A little more news coming out of Comic-Con: Caprica will return in January for the second half of its freshman season (is it really still the same season if it airs a year after the first half?) and Ronald D. Moore is confident that with the plot picking up we will see a second season; and in Stargate Universe‘s second season, we can expect to see Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) return to his self-deterministic ways when he discovered the bridge of the Destiny; Eli get a new love interest and also visit his grandmother (in Carlyle’s directorial debut), and the discovery of a larger overall mission for the residents of the Destiny. Also interesting was a discussion about the unique shooting style, with multiple hidden cameras on set.
Rumors: Matt Smith to depart Doctor Who after second series
by Doc on Jul.19, 2010, under Television
I will preface this by saying it comes from the British tabloid The Sun, but then again they did first post that 9th Doctor Christopher Eccleston wanted out after his first: “Pals” report that Matt Smith wants to quit so he can go into Hollywood movies. This is already being denied by co-star Karen Gillan, but we are talking about something that is still a year off, and who knows how the situation will change?
Crossover between Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe to happen
by Doc on Jul.16, 2010, under Television
Producer Joseph Mallozzi posted on his blog that there WILL be a crossover episode between the Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe crews, with two of the cast members of the former signing on. Which cast members? He isn’t saying, as Syfy has that joy all to themselves.
Two to one that Rodney McKay is making appearance.
David Prowse not welcome at official Star Wars functions?
by Doc on Jul.12, 2010, under Conventions, Television
It seems that David Prowse may have stepped on George Lucas’ toes, and Lucas ain’t happy. It isn’t clear exactly what precipitated this, but the British actor who portrayed the figure of Darth Vader in the original films says on his official web site that he is not only not invited to appear at Celebration V in Orlando, but also isn’t welcome at future Lucasfilm-involved functions. Prowse has been known to have disputes with Lucas in the past, often stating that he assumed he would be providing the voice of Vader in addition to the form, and also about a leak regarding the character’s death and thus did not appear as Anakin in Return Of The Jedi, but there has been no official reason given other than Prowse having “‘burnt too many bridges.” I saw him last year, and he seemed reasonable personable, although I know others have different opinions.
