Sci-Fi Storm

BBC will release the debut series of the 11th Doctor Matt Smith on November 9th, and to coincide with the change it will also be released on [sfs=1038]Blu-ray Disc[/sfs] in addition to [sfs=1039]standard DVD[/sfs]. The final episode of the 5th series airs this Saturday in the U.S. on BBC America.

After about a decade of development, production, post production, and a long search for distribution, Hyper Image is releasing their debut feature on DVD on May 25th.

Distributed by Phase 4 Films, the computer animated sci-fi action film follows the renegade Team Earth, as they struggle to compete in the high speed Star Car 5000 racing circuit.

The entire 1987 TV series of Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into The Future, a series perhaps ahead of its time (hundreds of TV channels competing for the limited attention spans of viewers in a cutthroat business), finally comes back to the future with a [sfs=1024]DVD release on August 10th[/sfs]. Ah, the Commodore computers (I owned one at the time), the Amiga graphics…I’m getting nostalgic…

[sfs=1016][/sfs]The next batch of classic Doctor Who episodes has been set for release on July 6th: [sfs=1016]The Space Museum/The Chase[/sfs] (Hartnell), [sfs=1015]The Time Monster[/sfs] (Pertwee), [sfs=1014]Underworld[/sfs] and [sfs=1013]The Horns Of Nimon[/sfs] (both Tom Baker). And speaking of who, the animated Tennant episode [sfs=1004]Dreamland[/sfs] appears to have been delayed until October.

Also, on August 24th, the final season of Lost comes out on [sfs=1018]Blu-ray[/sfs] and [sfs=1017]DVD[/sfs] – and for those that were waiting to just spend money once, the entire series will also be available on [sfs=1019]Blu-ray[/sfs] and [sfs=1020]DVD[/sfs] as well on the same date.

Lastly, the second half of Eureka‘s 3rd season, dubbed [sfs=1011]Season 3.5[/sfs], will be released June 29th.

Updated: A couple more releases – [sfs=1021]Warehouse 13: Season One[/sfs] is out June 29th as well, along with Sanctuary [sfs=1022]Season One[/sfs] (already out) and [sfs=1023]Season Two[/sfs] (June 15th).

Apparently I wasn’t the only one that got Avatar – so did 5.5 million others, with 1.5 million of that being Blu-ray copies, beating The Dark Knight‘s 1st-day sales record – despite the promise of the 3D Blu-ray (and expanded) version later this year. I’m watching right now, so read on for an live in-progress review (check for updates) from someone who hasn’t seen the movie yet (yes, shame on me…)

AMC’s re-invention of The Prisoner finds its way onto DVD tomorrow, so I spent some time this weekend with the DVD set to not only see how it looks, but also if it might make more sense on a second viewing…after all, it probably took several viewings of the original to figure out some of it, especially the final episode which is still debated to this day…

In a surprise move (given the possibility of a re-release), blockbuster Avatar may be poised to break more records soon as it sees both a [sfs=1009]Blu-ray[/sfs] and [sfs=1010]DVD[/sfs] release on April 22nd, 2010. Follow those links and pre-order now!!!

A&E’s re-imagining of The Prisoner starring Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen hits the streets on DVD next Tuesday, March 23rd. A much more visually striking film, it takes the concept in a new direction with different twists. It is of course a risk to remake and cult film, and fans of the original may have trouble with this interpretation if they try and fit it in within what they are familiar with, but taken on its own it provides an interesting psychological thriller framework – but fans of the original will easily recognize Rover…check out a deleted scene below as well!

Fans of Jeremiah have been waiting patiently, hoping for Season 2 to finally be released on DVD – considering [sfs=372]Season 1[/sfs] was released 6 years ago. But now you can [sfs=1005]finally get it tomorrow[/sfs], but only from Amazon.com (through our links of course). However, it isn’t your standard DVD set, but rather Amazon is publishing these on-demand on DVD-Rs…perhaps the future model for lower-demand titles? It will be interesting to see the quality of the release in this model.
