Roddenberry’s pilot movies Genesis II and Planet Earth on DVD
by Doc on Oct.07, 2009, under Movies, Video/DVD
Gene Roddenberry didn’t rest after Star Trek ended – he tried a few other things, and then tried to return to the genre with a post-apocalyptic vision of the future in the pilot movie Genesis II, where a scientist from the present day named Dylan Hunt (Alex Cord) who undergoes an experimental suspended animation procedure – only to remain frozen during a war and awakens 154 years later, and must decide whether the Pax or the Tyranian woman who helped revive him is worthy of his help. When that didn’t get picked up as a series, he took a page out of Trek history, and made another pilot movie, Planet Earth. Same situation, same protagonist (although now played by John Saxon), but set some time later and perhaps giving a better picture of how the series would be. Still it was not picked up. Primeval: Volume Two DVD review
by Doc on Sep.27, 2009, under Television, Video/DVD
This is an interesting review – I had not watched the ITV production Primeval at all at this point. I intended to when it was on BBC America, filling the void of Doctor Who and Torchwood at the time. Unfortunately various things got in the way and it fell off the radar. So, what to do when I have Primeval Volume Two in hand, without having seen the previous episodes? Throw it in the DVD player and hope I can follow what is going on…

Fifty Years After Twilight Zone, New Series, New Host Carry Its Storytelling Torch
by Doc on Jul.29, 2009, under Video/DVD
Allie Valentine writes “Fifty Years After Twilight Zone, New Series, New Host Carry Its Storytelling Torch;DARK MATTER DVDs recapture the golden era of TV with fresh voices, ideas and fans can try them free.
HOLLYWOOD – For many, Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone represents television’s watershed moment and that all TV that followed was a slow devolution leading to today’s reality show carnival. For generations of Americans, a certain nostalgia for the kind of stories Serling dished up remains to this day. Morality tales, twist endings and irony were all part of the mix that equaled one shining slogan to count on: Expect the unexpected.”
Read More for more details. It sounds interesting – although the more recent The Outer Limits ran for many years, I’ve felt that anthology series can be tough to produce as viewers don’t have anything to get attached to other than the storytelling itself, and that needs to be exceptional to bring them back over and over. Perhaps this is another medium for which these tales can now be told…
Torchwood: Children Of Earth DVD review…
by Doc on Jul.27, 2009, under Television, Video/DVD
Torchwood: Children of Earth, which aired last week on BBC America is out on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, but I’ve had the opportunity to view the DVD today. I do not believe the Blu-ray differs in content, other than it has an HD audio track compared to the DVD’s standard Dolby 5.1 track (and of course, an HD transfer).
