Andromeda Strain miniseries/DVD review
by Doc on May.28, 2008, under Television, Video/DVD
The miniseries just aired on A&E, and the DVD will be released next Tuesday. Remaking a classic (albeit dated) movie is always a risky business, so the obvious question is – did they do a good job? Alas, not really – but they could have…

by Doc on Apr.18, 2008, under Television, Video/DVD
Stargate: Continuum, the second direct-to-DVD Stargate SG-1 movie, will be released on July 29th on DVD. A Blu-Ray release is also planned, but I do not know at this time if its the same day. Three weeks before that, Stargate Atlantis sees its Fourth Season released on July 8th.

by Doc on Apr.15, 2008, under Television, Video/DVD
The upcoming miniseries remake of The Andromeda Strain, which won’t air for another month on TV, is following suit with some other recent issues and set a release date for the DVD already: June 3rd, 2008. The miniseries stars Benjamin Bratt as Dr. Jeremy Stone, and is executive produced by Ridley and Tony Scott. Read More for the complete press release, and check out the official site.
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem DVD Review
by Doc on Apr.13, 2008, under Video/DVD
Another DVD release this Tuesday is Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, the latest in the merged franchises, picking up where Alien vs. Predator left off. This bloody slugfest will be out in two versions – the theatrical version and an unrated version (with some additional extras), plus the Blu-Ray version will have both. If you don’t have some of the other movies in either franchise, check our Sci-Fi Movies store for some different packages. Read More for a review of AVP-R.
Surface: The Complete Series DVD review
by Doc on Sep.03, 2006, under Television, Video/DVD
The NBC series Surface only lasted 15 episodes, but it seemed to be well-liked (it received the plurality of votes in our unscientific poll [Doc: Polls are no longer available on the site]), but suffered the same fate of its contemporaries (and most network SF) and was cancelled. Out now is the Surface: The Complete Series DVD set, which brings all 15 episodes and a few extras to the masses.
Ultimate Matrix review
by Doc on Dec.18, 2004, under Video/DVD
Wow. How do you find the time to review something that consists of 10 DVDs? The Ultimate Matrix Collection is just such a beast – with the [sfs=492]regular version[/sfs] and a cool [sfs=493]limited edition gift set[/sfs]. Nevertheless, I finally plowed through it. This review will start a new type of DVD review to be ironed out, with less emphasis on the feature than the technical aspects.
Review of THX 1138 Director’s Cut
by Doc on Dec.02, 2004, under General News, Movies, Video/DVD
I finally got the time to finish going through THX 1138 – The George Lucas Director’s Cut – a newborn has been taking a lot of our time and is a constant distraction – I’d like to view it again before writing this, but I promised a review a while ago. Anyways…in a nutshell, it may have been made in 1971, but it is still a relevant film and wears its age fairly well. And for the first feature film of the man who later gave us Star Wars and Indiana Jones, an amazing film.
The Chronicles of Riddick DVD review
by Doc on Nov.14, 2004, under Movies, Video/DVD
The Chronicles of Riddick DVD will be released Tuesday, but I was fortunate to get an advanced review copy. I had not seen the movie during its theatrical release, so I didn’t know what to expect. I was relatively pleased.

Next Tuesday, November 16th, Universal releases the Unrated Director’s Cut of the Vin Diesel vehicle The Chronicles of Riddick, the semi-sequel to Pitch Black (also available in Unrated Director’s Cut). This version includes 10 (or 15, depending on if you read the press release or the jacket) of footage, plus additional deleted scenes, Toombs’ Chase Log, and even the first level of the XBox game! Check out the DVD trailer (Windows Media: 128k 300k 700k), and the Escape from Cermatoria Flash game just released! I hope to have a review this weekend.
Planet of the Apes TV series on DVD
by Doc on Dec.07, 2001, under Video/DVD
I can’t believe I missed this. On November 20th, all 14 episodes of the 70s TV series Planet of the Apes was released on video. I remember this as a kid…especially the subway scene where Urko learns of the true history of the planet…and check out the review at Test Pattern. I’ve added a Miscellaneous section to the Sci-Fi TV Store for things like this.
