Primeval: Volume 3 on DVD and Blu-ray: Review

by on Jan.29, 2012, under Television, Video/DVD

Primeval: Volume 3 was released on both [sfs=1192]Blu-ray[/sfs] and [sfs=1191]DVD[/sfs] ([sfs=1189]Volume 1[/sfs] and [sfs=1190]Volume 2[/sfs] are only on DVD) from BBC Video in the U.S. a couple of weeks ago, and consists of what in the U.K. were considered Series 4 and Series 5 of the program, a total of 13 episodes. We reviewed Volume two back in 2009.

With Connor (Andrew Lee Potts, Alice), Abby (Hannah Spearritt, Seed of Chucky) and Danny (Jason Flemyng, X-Men: First Class, Snatch) trapped in the past at the end of Volume Two, the ARC has had to find new recruits to take their place. Matt (Ciarán McMenamin, Jericho, Demons), the new field leader, is an ex-soldier with a secret which he keeps hidden from his team. Unconventional and highly efficient Jess (Ruth Kearney, Gracie!) now runs operations from the ARC Control Center. Charismatic businessman and scientist Philip Burton (Alexander Siddig, Clash of the Titans, 24, Syriana, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) has become part owner of the ARC after the government lost faith in Home Office official James Lester’s (Ben Miller) ability to run such a dangerous and expensive operation on his own. Once Philip gained half ownership and privatized the ARC, the fine line between saving the country and creating scientific history became blurred. Will greed outweigh the true danger of the anomalies?

Star Wars Uncut: The entire movie, stitched from pieces

by on Jan.23, 2012, under Movies, Video/DVD

Like a quilt, sometimes you can take all the little pieces and stitch them together as a work of art…well, it may depend on your definition of art, but this is undeniably neat. In 2009 Casey Pugh took to the internet with an idea – take the entire movie of Star Wars: A New Hope, and remake it – in 15 second increments, crowd-source style. And now it’s available in its entirety online! Each piece was done by someone else, showing a wide range of ideas, from serious to tacky, from CGI to live action, from hand animation to puppets and dolls, from low budget to…well, I’m not sure it ever taxed someone’s wallet. But still, the result is entertaining…

Merlin: The Complete Third Season DVD review

by on Jan.22, 2012, under Television, Video/DVD

[sfs=1188]Merlin: The Complete Third Season[/sfs] was released on DVD by BBC this past week, just as the fourth series picks up on Syfy. The third series picks up a year after Morgana disappeared and the Great Dragon had ravaged Camelot before Merlin’s newly gained Dragonlord powers stopped him. Morgana’s disappearance has left Uther distraught while all his forces look for her. She is found, and appears to even forgive Merlin – but her schemes have not changed, and if anything, are more daring as she attempts to take the throne for herself with the help of Morgause (who we see more in this series). In the meantime, Arthur sees more in Gwen, which could be dangerous for her, while Lancelot returns and we are introduced to Gwaine, Percival, and Elyan (Gwen’s brother) who become Knights of Camelot. Throughout the season, we see Morgana and Morgause plot and scheme to take over Camelot, but others also have plans to murder Uther and take the crown.

Review: Apollo 18 DVD

by on Dec.18, 2011, under Movies, Video/DVD

Apollo 18 Cover ArtApollo 18, from Anchor Bay Entertainment and Dimension Films and directory Gonzalo López-Gallego, comes out on [asin=B004EPYZXU]Blu-ray[/asin] and [asin=B004EPYZXK]DVD[/asin] on December 27th. Presented as a “found footage” film (similar to The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity), it documents the ultra-secret Apollo 18 mission to the Moon’s South Pole in 1974 – a mission so secret the astronauts don’t know what they are there for. It stars Warren Christie (Alphas), Ryan Robbins (Sanctuary) and Lloyd Owen (The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Monarch of the Glen).

Logan’s Run – The Series to be released on DVD

by on Dec.15, 2011, under Television, Video/DVD

I just learned that Logan’s Run – The Series will be [sfs=1186]released on DVD April 10th, 2012[/sfs]. I’ve long thought that this series might never make it to DVD – it wasn’t particularly good and it didn’t last long, but it is one I remember as a kid. But it seems that slowly they are bringing out pretty much everything.

If you don’t quite remember the series, I did a Retro Review of it four years ago. I may just have to get the DVD set and re-review it…

What boycott? Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray breaks records

by on Sep.23, 2011, under Movies, Video/DVD

Although hardcore fans called for a boycott of the release, it seems that it didn’t stem the tide of fans purchasing [sfs=1098]Star Wars: The Complete Saga[/sfs] on Blu-ray. In the first week, 1 million copies were sold worldwide, setting a new record for a Blu-ray release. And that doesn’t include the individual trilogy releases (which didn’t include the extras).

Not bad for a nearly 35 year old franchise, but when you start marketing 13 months ahead of time, you get results.
