by Doc on Mar.22, 2013, under Television, Video/DVD
Oh my…Hulu has made available every episode of all the live-action Star Trek series for free! They are available for a “limited time”, which I’ve heard is the end of the month, so get watching!
And I checked – they appear to be the original uncut episodes of the original series, although with the remastered effects, at least with my spot-check of “The Trouble With Tribbles”, which has the vodka/scotch scene intact.

Moffat on Doctor Who 50th: Can’t be “about looking backwards”
by Doc on Mar.21, 2013, under Television
The new Entertainment Weekly features two different covers for Doctor Who (see them here, courtesy of Blogtor Who), but the more interesting bit came from the article inside, in which producer Steven Moffat was quoted as saying about the upcoming 50th Anniversary, “We can’t make this all about looking backwards. It’s actually got to be the start of a new story.”
This appears to be in relation to the desire among fans to have something like “The Eleven Doctors” special, featuring all living Doctors and somehow accommodating the deceased ones as well. But that’s a tall order to try and squeeze into an episode – even a super-sized one. But reading in to it more, I’m wondering about “…a new story.” Would a 50th Anniversary episode be used to kick off something new? Like, perhaps, a rumored new Doctor?!?
Are humans interstellar? Hold your rockets…
by Doc on Mar.20, 2013, under Science
This morning, the American Geophysical Union apparently sent out a press release that Voyager 1 had “officially” left the solar system, and of course the news outlets were abuzz…but a short time later they backed off that statement, and issued a correction that simply said, “Voyager 1 has entered a new region of space, sudden changes in cosmic rays indicate”.
Apparently the remaining instruments on Voyager 1 detected a change in high energy particles and gamma rays, signalling a change. However, not everyone agrees what is the point at which Voyager 1 can be considered to be in “interstellar space” – the vague point at which the effects of the Sun – primarily the solar wind – are no longer felt.
But now it seems at least they are back on the same page. The Voyager team at the Jet Propulsion Library issued a statement this afternoon:
The Voyager team is aware of reports today that NASA’s Voyager 1 has left the solar system,” said Edward Stone, Voyager project scientist based at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif. “It is the consensus of the Voyager science team that Voyager 1 has not yet left the solar system or reached interstellar space. In December 2012, the Voyager science team reported that Voyager 1 is within a new region called ‘the magnetic highway’ where energetic particles changed dramatically. A change in the direction of the magnetic field is the last critical indicator of reaching interstellar space and that change of direction has not yet been observed.
So it seems the AGU’s statement is actually old as well…so now everyone is waiting for the magnetic shift…and who knows when that will happen.
So, we may not be interstellar yet…but someday. And it is undeniable how amazing Voyager 1’s journey has been…

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Blu-ray review
by Doc on Mar.18, 2013, under Movies, Video/DVD
Tomorrow is the big day – the first installment of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released on [sfs=1287]Blu-ray[/sfs] and [sfs=1288]DVD[/sfs] tomorrow. And while we have to wait until December for part 2, The Desolation of Smaug, we can now journey back to Middle-earth to our heart’s content to see how the journey began…(don’t forget…you can use your Ultraviolet code from either version to access the Peter Jackson Q&A session and get the first sneak peek at The Desolation of Smaug on 3/24!)
(And I’ve discovered that I’ve probably been pronouncing Smaug wrong for many, many years…I’ve always just said “Smog”, but it seems it should be two syllables, something approximating “Sma-oohg”.)
First, let’s talk a bit about the feature…An Unexpected Journey covers approximately the first third of the book, up through the Gollum and goblin fights. From my own memory I thought it covered a lot more of the book, but it really is about a third. And it holds pretty true, at least from my memories of the book, which are probably about 15 years removed. It does start with a link-in to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, in the form of the older Bilbo (played Ian Holm again) writing in the Red Book, while explaining to Frodo (Elijah Wood) about his big adventure, showing events that took place just prior to his birthday party but weren’t shown in the The Fellowship of the Ring. This serves as a gateway in to the story using the familiar characters, and then flashes back to the younger Bilbo (now played by Martin Freeman), just before he is about to receive quite a few unexpected visitors.
