Amazon enhances S3 storage with next generation cloud technology

by on Apr.01, 2011, under Science

Amazon’s Web Services group today announced a breakthrough in a new cloud storage technology that will allow for massive amounts of data to be stored in a global network, and gets right down to the molecular level.

“We’re literally encoding the data by combining molecules into a matrix,” said lead scientist Dr. Rane Scamall, whose team has been developing the technology in the company’s Dublin-based labs. “By chaining the molecules in a certain way, we are able to encode the bits in the smallest ever domain, allowing for near-infinite storage – certainly enough to store the entirety of human knowledge.”

The details of how it works are still vague (mastermind Jeff Bezos is trying to accelerate the patent filings), but the system is envisioned as a near-line medium in a hierarchical storage system. “Although the density of data can be quite high, there are limits to the overall density of the molecules themselves within the medium,” Dr. Scamall explained. “If we try to increase the density too much, we can have phase transition issues and it becomes harder to decode the data. So currently the data migration rates are quite slow. We have plenty of volume to work with, however.”

Data that isn’t needed rapidly eventually gets “floated” to new storage system. While in this state, it can migrate freely to other systems until it is time to be recalled via “currents”. When it is time to be recalled, an electrical field is applied, which sets the system into motion, the molecules combine and begin to precipitate out of the medium and into collectors. More traditional channels can then carry the data to where it is actually needed.

There are still issues to be worked out, however.

“One problem we are still trying to solve is that the data precipitation is chaotic. Various environmental factors can cause perturbations in the flow, and the data could in fact be received in the wrong collector – or miss it entirely.” Dr. Scamall does add, “We don’t technically lose any of the data, but it can be very hard to find. Eventually it will find it’s way back into the cloud where we can attempt to retrieve it again.

Currently the technology works with water molecules, which are already quite abundant on Earth, but it could extend to other more complex molecules – an important need if the technology is to extend beyond the bounds of our planet – or if there are issues on availability on this one. Dr. Scamall quipped, “Water is both plentiful and scarce on our world, so we wouldn’t want our technology to trump other needs. But in reality, this technology has been around for centuries – we are only now learning how to harness it more effectively. And eventually we’ll have it pefect, as right as rain.”

Cranston joins Total Recall, but no trip to Mars?

by on Mar.30, 2011, under Movies

I’ve been hearing from various different directions that some of the clues laid for the plot of the Total Recall remake, given in the announcement that Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) has joined the cast, could mean that in this version there is no trip to Mars.

In both the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film and the original story, the protagonist, Douglas Quaid, wishes he could go to Mars, but can only afford the memories of such a trip, along with some added extras like being a secret agent, as implanted by the Rekall corporation. When they try to implant the memories, something goes wrong – suppressed memories surface, and it turns out he IS a secret agent, and the answer to what happened to him lies on Mars!

In the details that were given for the new version, Quaid still comes to believe he is a spy, but he is somehow embroiled in the situation between Euromerica and New Shangai, two large nations on the brink of war. Cranston will play the leader of Euromerica, who may be planning to attack New Shanghai.

Mars could still be in the cards, but I’m wondering if this might be a little closer to a Bourne-type thriller.

In the next sneak peek clip of the all-new episode of Being Human, Nora tells Josh that she’s already getting sick from the pregnancy and she feels like she’s showing too. Josh is shocked and questions whether she should be experiencing both already, while clearly keeping to himself the fear of what might really be inside her. He reassures her that he wants to stay with her through the pregnancy, and then she tells him her HCG levels are off the charts. That basically means there could be multiple fetuses, or a possible birth defect. Josh looks like he needs one big gulp and a deep breath while he confirms he will be at the ultrasound to figure it all out. Watch the clip and tune in on Monday at 9/8c on Syfy to see exactly what Nora and Josh could be bringing into the world.

by on Mar.29, 2011, under Television

Think Syfy’s been doing the wrong thing with their programming choices? Apparently not. Syfy announced today that their viewership for the first quarter of 2011 was up 12 percent overall and 16 percent in Adults 18-34, boosted by freshman series Face Off (which averaged 1.53 million viewers) and Being Human (1.8 million), both of which were renewed for a second season.

Also cited were WWE Friday Night SmackDown, with a whopping 3.2 million viewers, and Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files, which set a new series high with the season 2 premiere last Wednesday with 1.19 million viewers, up a whopping 31 percent over the series debut in July 2010.

In the next sneak peek clip of the all-new episode of Merlin, Arthur and Merlin are riding horses through the forest as Merlin is questioning his motives and incessantly asks where they are headed. Arthur jokes that if he tells him he has to kill him, but Merlin suspects he’ll end up dead anyways, so Arthur might as well get it over with now. Arthur’s nagging about Merlin being pessimistic gets them stuck with others and potentially set up to be dealt to slave traders. Instead, Merlin is called on to fight a champion in the arena. Fearfully, he hopes it’s not so, but you will have to watch the clip and tune in on Friday at 10/9c on Syfy to find out!
