Wil Wheaton on Big Bang Theory tonight

by on Oct.19, 2009, under Television

On tonight’s Big Bang Theory, Wil Wheaton guest stars as himself, and it looks like he encounters Sheldon (Jim Parsons) at a gaming tournament and they face off against each other, and Sheldon has a bone to pick – apparently Wheaton no-showed at a signing that Sheldon attended, and Sheldon never forgets a grudge. From the images on SCI FI Wire (will they ever change that name too?), it looks like they are playing a card game like Magic: The Gathering (although the backs of the cards look different), and he’s wearing a Penny Arcade T-shirt whose name is not safe for work…

by on Oct.12, 2009, under Movies

Bryan Singer, who directed the first two X-Men movies but skipped on the third, says he is interesting in a return to the franchise. “I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast,” he said, and enjoys making movies in the SF&F genres because he can deal with serious issues disguised as entertainment.

LCROSS impacts, but fails to dazzle

by on Oct.09, 2009, under Science

NASA’s LCROSS mission, a “cheap” $79 million attempt to determine if there is enougt water on the moon for future use, successfully impacted a Centaur rocket into the moon’s surface at Cabeus Crater, and then followed it with the scientific platform to detect particles in the plume and then likewise impact the surface. However, it failed to produce the “spectacular” plume images everyone expected. It remains to be seen what the scientific data shows. More information is available at the LCROSS mission site. Hopefully we did not anger our lunar overlords…

Roddenberry’s pilot movies Genesis II and Planet Earth on DVD

by on Oct.07, 2009, under Movies, Video/DVD

Gene Roddenberry didn’t rest after Star Trek ended – he tried a few other things, and then tried to return to the genre with a post-apocalyptic vision of the future in the pilot movie Genesis II, where a scientist from the present day named Dylan Hunt (Alex Cord) who undergoes an experimental suspended animation procedure – only to remain frozen during a war and awakens 154 years later, and must decide whether the Pax or the Tyranian woman who helped revive him is worthy of his help. When that didn’t get picked up as a series, he took a page out of Trek history, and made another pilot movie, Planet Earth. Same situation, same protagonist (although now played by John Saxon), but set some time later and perhaps giving a better picture of how the series would be. Still it was not picked up. K9 now in production

by on Oct.05, 2009, under Television

Park Entertainment has announced that the new Doctor Who spinoff, now just called K9, is in production. SCI FI Wire has has a trailer for it, but it doesn’t seem like the author of the article cares…the show is aimed more at children, probably at the same level as The Sarah Jane Adventures or even a bit younger. To deal with the fact that he is in the “present” time involved (if not seen regularly) in The Sarah Jane Adventures, the new series is set in the near future. And now he has ears!
