Reminder: Masters of Science Fiction starts Saturday 10pm
by Doc on Aug.04, 2007, under Television
Masters of Science Fiction starts airing on ABC at 10pm this Saturday (August 4th). ABC thinks the show is “too artistic” for television – lets show them we want artistry and get the ratings up there – maybe we can at least see the two episodes they don’t plan to show…
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix review
by Doc on Aug.03, 2007, under Movies
I got to watch Order of the Phoenix a second time this weekend, this
time in IMAX with the entire climactic battle shown in 3D, which was done
very well and was totally cool. So here is a bit of a review (relatively
spoiler free) for the 5th movie installment of the series.
Dark is Rising name change
by Doc on Aug.02, 2007, under Movies
The Dark is Rising, the Newbery winning novel turned feature film, is getting a bit of a name change. Now referred to as The Seeker: The Dark is Rising, it involves a boy (Alexander Ludwig, The Sandlot 3) who finds out that he is The Seeker, the last of a group of immortals dedicated to fighting evil forces. Also starring are Ian McShane (Deadwood) as Merriman Lyon and Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) as the Dark Rider. The movie is due out in October. I sense the name change is in anticipation of sequels…

Babylon 5: The Lost Tales review
by Doc on Jul.30, 2007, under General News
Instead of joining in on all the fun of Comic-Con this year (I was invited to moderate a panel but couldn’t attend), I got at least a consolation prize – an advance copy of Babylon 5: The Lost Tales for review. So Read More for the no spoiler review – the Encyclopedia should be updated soon. Babylon 5: The Lost Tales will be released Tuesday. Check out the official web site for some previews as well.
Another Blade Runner DVD edition on its way
by Doc on Jul.27, 2007, under General News
It seems to be the philosophy of studios to keep re-releasing movies with more extras. This time though, there is more meat. Ridley Scott has edited Blade Runner one last time, to produce “The Final Cut”. There will be a low-cost two-disc Special Edition, and a full-bore 5 disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition complete with a “Deckard Briefcase”. The versions are expected to be out on December 18th. Limited Edition Blu-ray and HD-DVD releases of the Ultimate Collector’s Edition are expected as well, as well as a 4 disc “Collector’s Edition”.
Young Spock cast – and the old one, too
by Doc on Jul.27, 2007, under Movies
Guess the long-standing rumors of the upcoming J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie being about a younger Kirk and Spock were true. Both Zachary Quinto (Syler in Heroes) and Leonard Nimoy were made an appearance at Comic-Con, with Quinto cast in the role of the younger Spock, and Nimoy also appearing in the film. Kirk is still to be cast, but Abrams did say William Shatner will likely have a role. Production should begin in December.
The Ood return to Doctor Who
by Doc on Jul.26, 2007, under Television
That creepy work-loving slave race from Series 2, the Ood, will make a return in the 4th series episode “Planet of the Ood”, where we will find out about the origins of the race and why they behave the way they do. Will they be as creepy though?
