by on Nov.12, 2004, under Movies, Video/DVD

Next Tuesday, November 16th, Universal releases the Unrated Director’s Cut of the Vin Diesel vehicle The Chronicles of Riddick, the semi-sequel to Pitch Black (also available in Unrated Director’s Cut). This version includes 10 (or 15, depending on if you read the press release or the jacket) of footage, plus additional deleted scenes, Toombs’ Chase Log, and even the first level of the XBox game! Check out the DVD trailer (Windows Media: 128k 300k 700k), and the Escape from Cermatoria Flash game just released! I hope to have a review this weekend.

Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars review

by on Nov.09, 2004, under Television

I finally got to watch both parts of the Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars (pre-order from Amazon) miniseries – I got delayed due to getting a new DirecTV TiVo and moving the existing one which had it recorded to replace the old standalone original TiVo, blah, blah, blah…). So, finally, here is a review…some unavoidable spoilers ahead.

Storm 2.0 Sneak Peak; Review Queue

by on Nov.06, 2004, under General News

Well, I’ve done a lot of cleanup work of the original mockup, and actually made it a little more functional (articles are actually database driven now, with a couple of samples for testing). You can take a quick peek of the new setup here. Note that I am actively working on it still, and the theme elements are not complete (images need to be re-rendered, etc. – I’m hoping to use PNGs with transparency maps where possible), and as I work on things it may be offline or break. Just thought I’d offer a glance. One thing’s for sure – no more pastel theme 🙂 In the meantime, I thought I’d offer what’s in the queue for review I am trying to get to: [sfs=437]Land of the Lost: The Complete First Season[/sfs] (although fiziko over at Bureau 42 has already posted a review); [sfs=477]THX-1138: The George Lucas Director’s Cut Special Edition[/sfs] and [sfs=424]V: The Complete Series[/sfs], the latter two generously provided by Warner Bros. Online.

by on Nov.03, 2004, under General News

Chris Gould over at DVDAnswers.com has finished his series on the changes between the original, special edition, and DVD versions of the Star Wars Trilogy with the details changes of Return of the Jedi. Biggest change which we already heard about – Hayden Christensen appears at the end as the “ghost” of Anakin.

New Daleks show some changes

by on Nov.02, 2004, under Television

Both The Sun (with its quirks – he’s been “P. Diddy” for a while) and Dark Horizons have images of the new Daleks – notibly gold in color and some minor cosmetic differences. Apparently the new Daleks can fly – they now have jets in the bottom.

Lack of updates

by on Oct.26, 2004, under General News

Just letting everyone know why there haven’t been too many updates – and don’t expect too many either. I’ve got another kid on the way, and other family emergencies all happening at the same time, so I’m stretched thinner than usual. And all those late nights watching the Red Sox…if I hear anything major I’ll post – and any contributions will make it easier on me. I hope to take some of my downtime if I end up with any to work on some new software (I’ve got bigger ideas than time allows alas) and get off the overly-bloated and complex (for this purpose) Slashcode and on to software of my own design. I wish I could decide on a light-on-dark vs. dark-on-light scheme – the latter makes certain image issues easier…Update: Little Elizabeth arrived at 8:25am 10/27, almost exactly 12 hours before the first pitch of Game 4 of the World Series, where the Red Sox won their first in 86 years!

PRIMER sci-fi movie

by on Oct.24, 2004, under Movies

Robin Rowe writes “I saw this movie screened by IFP at the L.A. Film School last week and was impressed. It’s a great “heavy thinking” sci-fi film about a startup that unintentionally invents time travel. Well produced and shot with film despite small budget. http://primermovie.com/ In limited distribution through Landmark. http://www.landmarktheatres.com/Films/films_frames et.asp?id=39929 Primer won the Dramatic Grand Jury prize at this years Sundance Film Festival.

Detailed changes of The Empire Strikes Back

Shatner relases new album

by on Oct.18, 2004, under General News

I read about this before, but forgot to post: William Shatner, currently starring as the perfectly-cast, over-the-top Denny Crane on Boston Legal, is releasing a new album, titled “Has Been” – and he actually sings, as opposed to his previous spoken-word (and often ridiculed) treatment, “The Transformed Man”. Still, Nimoy singing “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” is my all-time most disturbing musical experience (available on “Spaced Out: The Best of Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner”. This Google Search should net you some copies of the video if you still don’t believe in it…
