Rama to debut on net as well as in theaters

by on Jan.09, 2004, under Movies

We’ve been following the slow progress of Morgan Freeman’s production of Rendezvous with Rama for a while, but there hasn’t been any new news until now. Revelations Entertainment announced at CES that they plan to release a movie in the future simultaneously in theaters as well as on the Internet – and this is apparently Rama. Note that I saw another report about this, and the movie name wasn’t given, but it is the likely candidate.

SCI FI announces SCI FI Thursday

by on Jan.08, 2004, under Television

I’m not sure where they get off calling it “SCI FI” Thursday, but Bonnie Hammer announced the new two-hour block of original programming aimed at a younger set. Scare Tactics returns in a 10pm slot, preceded by the new hour-long reality show Mad Mad House, a 10-episode run in which 5 “alternative lifestylists” (let’s see – a Wiccan, a vampire, a voodoo priestess, and naturist, and a “primitive” – how about “weirdos”?) run a house in which 10 “normal” people live. Following up at 10:30pm will be the animated Tripping the Rift, mentioned here before.

LeGuin’s Earthsea to become Sci-Fi Mini-series

by on Jan.08, 2004, under Television

tchansen writes SciFiWire reports that Ursula K. Le Guin‘s Earthsea is approved to become a mini-series for the SciFi Channel and production begins this spring in New Zealand. The mini-series consists of the first two books in the trilogy, A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan.” For those who don’t know the story, it deals with a reckless boy who is destined to become a great sorcerer. Perhaps capitalizing a little on Harry Potter? (SCI FI, not Le Guin…)

Bermuda Triangle miniseries from Bryan Singer

by on Jan.06, 2004, under Television

Bryan Singer (X-Men) is going to produce a 4-part, 8-hour miniseries involving the legendary Bermuda Triangle for the SCI FI Channel, with the idea to be to “make kids scared of [the Bermuda Triangle] again.” He will work with genre vet Dean Devlin (Stargate, Independence Day).

Could The Hobbit get made? Not yet…

by on Jan.05, 2004, under Movies

Want to see The Hobbit on the big screen? Apparently so does New Line, which is is looking to pick up the rights, although they apparently haven’t discussed the possibility with Peter Jackson yet. Jackson also is trying to build a museum in Wellington, NZ as a thank you for filming there, but the Tolkien Estate so far won’t allow it, so negotiations for The Hobbit could be at issue as well. Update 1/5: There is more info about the rights. Apparent New Line does own the production rights, but somehow United Artists owns the distribution rights, and I’m guessing the hangup is that they won’t work together…

Decision on Galactica held until new year

by on Dec.28, 2003, under Television

There is a report that the SCI FI Channel has postponed any decision on the future of Battlestar Galactica until the new year. The main cast contracts have been extended until Jan 31st, so there should definitely be a decision by then. Apparently they are worried about the cost.

Stores outage today…

by on Dec.20, 2003, under General News

The Sci-Fi Storm Stores will be offline for a while today while I do a much needed upgrade to the OS on that server. Hopefully it won’t take long, but it may take a bit to redo a lot of my customizations. Update: All should be well now. Update 12/23: Apparently the script that updates DNS with my dynamic IP didn’t work, and Verizon decided to change my address after two months. So the stores are down at the moment, but I’m working on it….Update: Fixed, but it may take some time for the DNS caches to get the new address, and you may need to restart your browser.
