David Stewart Launches Eurocon 2007 in Ireland Bid

by on Oct.22, 2003, under Conventions

djryan writes Dave Stewart says:

At the penultimate panel session of P-Con, I announced my intention to bid for the 2007 Eurocon. Over the next year I will examine the
feasability of actually running the Eurocon here. That depends on a
number of factors such as finding an appropriate venue, a suitable guest of honour and an appropriate date.

I’m taking pre-supporting donations of ?2 to guage interest and to raise funds for running the bid. If you see me at a convention ask me about it.“ No link provided…

Star Wars sequel trilogy still possible?

by on Oct.21, 2003, under Movies

Dark Horizons has hit on an undying rumor that the fabled Episodes 7-9 of the Star Wars trilogy of trilogies may still happen, despite Lucas’s adamant denials that they were ever planned. Apparently, Steven Spielberg might direct, with Lucas just writing – of if Lucas won’t, Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, Indiana Jones IV) will take up the pen.

SCI FI looking for the facts?

by on Oct.21, 2003, under General News

OK, this has appeared everywhere already: The SCI FI Channel has joined the fray in trying to find the truth about a UFO sighting in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania in 1965, and is planning a lawsuit against NASA utilizing the Freedom of Information Act. Other agencies could be sued as well. And Friday the channel will air a special called “The New Roswell: Kecksburg Exposed”, hosted by Bryant Gumbel, apparently bringing viewers up-to-date with the investigation so far. Maybe with the sale of Vivendi Universal (SCI FI’s parent) to NBC, we can get back to some actual science fiction

Latest on Who return

by on Oct.17, 2003, under Television

I came across some of the latest news about the new Who series over at Outpost Gallifrey. First, after rampant speculation about stand-up (and apparently frequently transvestite) comedian Eddie Izzard being the next Doctor, Izzard himself said it’s news to him – and “I don’t think the BBC would want me. They’d probably rather spit on me and slap me about with fish.” Apparently 4th Doctor Tom Baker started that one in an interview. Current front runner in the rumors is Brit actor Bill Nighy (no, not Bill Nye the Science Guy).

New Lost in Space series back on track?

by on Oct.09, 2003, under Television

We previously reported that NBC had nixed plans for a new Lost in Space series, due in part to Jonathan Harris’ (Dr. Smith) death. Well, it appears things are moving again. Synthesis Entertainment, the company Kevin Burns (producer of a lot of those A&E Biographies) and Jon Jashni (Anna and the King) put together to resurrect Irwin Allen’s properties, partnering with director John Woo (M:I-2) and writer Doug Petrie (Buffy: The Vampire Slayer series), are planning a new series again, and a “strong response” was received from the networks. It is also aimed as a family drama like the original pilot, set 100 years in the future. Side note: Season 1 of the original series is due on DVD January 6th.

Update 10/9: The WB has order a pilot.

Network issues…

by on Oct.07, 2003, under General News

In case you didn’t notice, Sci-Fi Storm was unavailable for a time due to a network outage. Obviously it’s back up now, but that isn’t guaranteed yet, so expect other outages…and it seems I’m not the only one – SCI FI Wire seems to have its own problems. Must be aliens…

by on Oct.05, 2003, under Movies

Could the Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy finally get made? We’ve seen slow progress before. But CHUD is reporting that Spyglass/Disney has finally given the green light for production. No casting info but Jay Roach (Austin Powers) is still attached.

FAB Gear gears up for Gerry Anderson fans

For years, American and Canadian fans of British TV Producer Gerry Anderson’s shows, such as Thunderbirds, Space: 1999, UFO, Captain Scarlet, Supercar, Stingray, and Fireball XL5 have been frustrated in their search for collectibles based on the ’60’s and ’70’s sci-fi programs. Forced to buy goods from sources outside of North America, many fans have been swindled by unscrupulous dealers, waited months to get orders that were incorrectly filled, or been charged high shipping prices for merchandise.
