2001 Sci-Fi Storm Movie Awards Nominations Open

Nominations are now open for the following awards: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Special Effects, Cheesiest Effects, Biggest Disappointment, and Great Maker Forgive Us. Could Roddenberry’s Genesis II make it on third try?

Gene Roddenberry’s Genesis II TV movie, about a scientist in cryogenic suspension awakening over 150 years later and finds the world is now primitive after a cataclysmic war and starred Alex Cord, was a pilot for a series – it didn’t make it. He resurrected it a year later with Planet Earth, kind of a second episode with John Saxon replacing Cord. It still didn’t get picked up (although the premise was good). Now, it may get a third try…
Pern series gets green light

Warner Bros. has placed the order for Pern, a live-action series based on Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern novels. Ronald D. Moore, former writer for the Star Trek franchise and current writer for Roswell, is heading up the production. Moore, in a conversation with Sci-Fi Wire, said that it finally can be done “…because of the technology.”
Soft SF Writer’s Association Awards

The Soft Science Fiction Writer’s Association sponsors an annual contest (top prize: $100) for the year’s best “Soft SF” – defined as where character, emotion and artistic effect take precedence over plot(?) and science. Monsters, Inc. to bow early

Another Lost World

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the BBC and A&E are jointly developing a 3-hour TV movie of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, using a combination of animatronics and CGI. It will probably be shown stateside in the latter half of 2002 – this time the Brits will get it first…Isn’t there a syndicated series already?

Alien 5? Not quite…

A London tabloid (the Sunday Express) is apparently reporting that Sigourney Weaver has signed on to do Alien 5 for £15,000,000 ($22,000,000). Reuters and Yahoo have picked it up – but apparently, they didn’t take into account the source. That doesn’t mean its not happening, but as tabloid is the only known source of the info for a movie that hasn’t left the rumor stage, take it with a grain of quadrotriticale…
