Syfy just announced that it has ordered a 10-episode third season of the hit show Face Off, and that Levar Burton (Star Trek: The Next Generation) will guest judge on the Feb. 22nd episode.

Syfy Digital Press Tour: Face Off returns, Monster Man cometh

Two of the unscripted panels we had were for the returning make-up competition show Face Off, and the new “follow around” docu-series Monster Man.

Face Off is the reality competition show involving makeup effects artists that just began shooting its second season which will begin airing January 11th at 10pm ET. Host McKenzie Westmore and judge Ve Neill were on hand to talk about the show and tell us about the upcoming season.

A preview of the Syfy Digital Press Tour event

Open casting call for competitors in Syfy’s Face Off Season 2

Did you like Face Off? Or did you think you could do better? If the latter, now is your chance! Syfy is looking for competitors for the second season of the hit show, and will be holding open auditions in both Los Angeles and New York this Sunday!

Who: Syfy’s Face Off, the hit competition reality series that celebrates the incredible artistry of special FX make-up, exploring the world of these pros and the unlimited imagination which allows them to create amazing works of living art. The series incorporates effects make-up, as well as a a wide range of skill sets including prosthetics, sculpting, casting and molding. Each episode involves incredible reveals of the competitors’ finished work, and the drama of one contestant being sent home by the panel of expert and celebrity judges. It all culminates in one winner and one $100,000 grand prize that will launch a career.

What: Casting men and women, both professionals and novices to the art of special FX make-up. Must be 18 years or older and proficient in beautifying, prosthetics and special FX.  Interested participants can obtain an application by sending an email to:

Syfy viewership up 12 percent overall for quarter

Think Syfy’s been doing the wrong thing with their programming choices? Apparently not. Syfy announced today that their viewership for the first quarter of 2011 was up 12 percent overall and 16 percent in Adults 18-34, boosted by freshman series Face Off (which averaged 1.53 million viewers) and Being Human (1.8 million), both of which were renewed for a second season.

Also cited were WWE Friday Night SmackDown, with a whopping 3.2 million viewers, and Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files, which set a new series high with the season 2 premiere last Wednesday with 1.19 million viewers, up a whopping 31 percent over the series debut in July 2010.

Face Off series premiere: “Welcome to the Jungle”

Here is a little preview of what to expect on tomorrow’s premiere episode of Face Off the special effects make up competition on Syfy. Hosted by McKenzie Westmore (Passions), the competition will be judged by Ve Neill (Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands), Glenn Hetrick (Heroes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files) and Patrick Tatopoulos (Underworld, Independence Day, Resident Evil: Extinction).

Take a look at how the contestants will work in pairs and draw inspiration from animals in order to build a never seen before creature. However, some teams start to see their creations are similar to others. Will they have to build something new from scratch, or simply beat out the others?

As an added bonus, you can also see video from the live event at The Grove mall in Los Angeles.

Face Off premieres Wednesday, January 26th, at 10PM ET.

Syfy hosting a Face Off event in LA tomorrow

Just found out about this – if you are in the Los Angeles area and want to see some of the best makeup artists in action, Syfy will be throwing a live demonstration of its upcoming Face Off show at The Grove tomorrow (Thursday, January 20th, 2011) starting at 12:30pm PT, where the artists will transform models into the likeness of Mother Earth.
