R2-D2’s builder and Star Trek: The Next Generation and Battlestar Galactica VFX artist have passed away

by on Mar.07, 2016, under Movies, Obituaries, Television

Two industry passings were sadly reported this weekend.

Tony Dyson, who referred to himself as “R2-D2’s Dad”, passed away at the age of 68. While working at his own studio, the White Horse Toy Company, he was commissioned by George Lucas to turn Ralph McQuarrie’s sketches of a plug-shaped mechanical character into an astromech that would become the most loved droid in two galaxies.

On his web site Dyson wrote about the return of R2-D2 in Episode VII, “The love for R2 is universal; no other Star Wars character has been loved over the years the way R2-D2 has, his merchandising has rocketed over the years and his influence in the world of robotics is truly remarkable.”

Emmy-winning visual effect artist Gary Hutzel, who’s career shot starward when he helped define the look of Star Trek: The Next Generation including the infamous Borg Cube, as well as the U.S.S. Defiant design for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, passed away on Thursday at the age of 60.

Hutzel later worked in movies, including Red Planet and Spy Kids, but would return to television for Ronald D. Moore’s reboot of Battlestar Galactica, where he won two of his Emmys.

Tidbits: Rod Roddenberry joins Star Trek; McShane to American Gods; ABC early pickups; will Doctor attend Class?

by on Mar.03, 2016, under Movies, Television

Some Thursday tidbits for you…

Rod Roddenberry, the son of the “Great Bird of the Galaxy”, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and president of Roddenberry Entertainment, will join the upcoming Star Trek series for CBS All Access as an executive producer, along with chief operating officer Trevor Roth. Roddenberry Entertainment will co-produce the series.

Actor Ian McShane (Deadwood) will play the mysterious con man Mr. Wednesday in Starz’ series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, where the gods of myth are about to enter a war against the gods of modern society representing money, power, etc.

ABC gave quite a few early pickups to its shows, including Once Upon A Time and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Absent, at least so far, is Agent Carter, which appears to be a long shot at this point – especially since star Haley Atwell has signed on to do a pilot for ABC. While Carter currently operates on a half-season schedule it is possible that if the other show is also half-season she could do both, but the shows only modest ratings already were pointing at an ending for the show.

And finally, the Radio Times is reporting that Peter Capaldi is set to show up in the upcoming Doctor Who spinoff Class which is set at the Coal Hill School – where the very first episode of Doctor Who started and where Clara Oswald had been teaching. “It wil[sic] have a close connection with Doctor Who so don’t be surprised if Peter pops up,” according to someone close to the production. Now, my interpretation of that statement is that it isn’t definite Capaldi will appear, but that the story will allow for it.

With several official live action spin-off series in the history of the show (K-9 and Company (only one episode produced), Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and K-9), the Doctor only appeared on The Sarah Jane Adventures – but he did so in two incarnations: both David Tennant and Matt Smith appeared in separate two-parters.

Nicholas Meyer to write and executive produce Star Trek series

by on Feb.29, 2016, under Television

Nicholas Meyer, who helped rescue the Star Trek franchise from near obliteration after Star Trek: The Motion Picture, is joining the team for CBS All Access’ Star Trek series as a writer and executive producer, working with showrunner Bryan Fuller.

Meyer, along with Harve Bennett, waded through the aftermath of the first Star Trek film, which Paramount disliked but was still a financial success to warrant a sequel. He was brought on as director, but took on an uncredited rewrite of a script for the second film in order to get it done in 12 days so they could begin production. He changed the style of the franchise, and came up with what was arguably the best film of the entire franchise in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. And although he pledged not to get tied to a franchise, he would work on Star Trek again – writing the “present day” portions of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and co-writing and directing Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country – thus being involved in what many consider the three best of the six original cast films.

Bryan Fuller returns to Star Trek as showrunner

by on Feb.09, 2016, under Television

Writer Bryan Fuller, who got his start on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and then Star Trek: Voyager, will return to the franchise to manage the untitled upcoming CBS All Access Star Trek series.

Fuller said, “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before.” Kurtzman is serving as executive producer, with plans to debut the series next January.

Fuller, who created and produced Hannibal and Pushing Daisies, is also currently working on an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods for Starz.

CBS/Paramount sue crowdfunded Star Trek prequel film

by on Dec.30, 2015, under Television

CBS Studios and Paramount, owners of the Star Trek franchise, have filed suit against the producers of Axanar, a crowdfunded film that was set to begin production in January, but released a short called “Prelude to Axanar” in 2014. (Read more after the video)

Axanar gives the story of Captain Garth, who appeared in the third season episode “Whom the Gods Destroy”, as a former Starfleet captain – considered one of the greatest – who was imprisoned in a Federation insane asylum.

Axanar Productions, led by Alec Peters – who, oddly enough, was the official archivist for the franchise, appointed by CBS – have stated that they are not licensed – from their web site:

No, Axanar is an independent project that uses the intellectual property of CBS under the provision that Axanar is totally non-commercial. That means we can never charge for anything featuring their marks or intellectual property and we will never sell the movie, DVD/Blu-ray copies, T-shirts, or anything which uses CBS owned marks or intellectual property.

Now, I am not a lawyer, but simply declaring your work non-commercial – and whether you pledge not to sell anything, etc. – does not permit you to use someone else’s intellectual property, regardless of your intent, quality, etc. And it doesn’t matter how much the fans scream for it either. You have to have permission, or use it under what’s called “fair use”, but most of those revolve around educational uses, or the infamous “parody”. This isn’t a parody. And they are raising money via donations to pay for the production – which could fall under a commercial venture.

However, there are already a number of fan-made productions out there that also use the same intellectual property – notably Star Trek: Phase II (originally called Star Trek: New Voyages), which CBS/Paramount has tolerated as long as they aren’t used to make money. But I don’t know their funding model – I know the actors are volunteers, so perhaps it is all volunteer work.

We’ll see if the two can get along in the near future to produce the story, because I’d like to see it. And they have a number of Star Trek actors and other genre actors lined up, including Richard Hatch, Tony Todd, Gary Graham, and Kate Vernon.

Alex Kurtzman to bring Star Trek back to the small (and tiny) screens

by on Nov.02, 2015, under Television

With Star Trek ready to celebrate its 50th year in 2016, CBS has finally pulled the trigger on a new Star Trek series. But it won’t be for a traditional TV network, or even syndication.

The untitled series will debut on the CBS broadcast network sometime in January 2017, that will only serve as a launching pad to CBS All Access, it’s recently launched streaming service.

Details of the show have not been released, but it is known that it will not feature the classic characters, who are still involved in the film franchise.

Alex Kurtzman, who has been shepherding the film franchise, will executive produce the new series for CBS Television Studios, with Heather Kadin from Kurtzman/Orci Paper Products, the shingle Kurtzman and long time producer partner Roberto Orci set up at CBS Studios. Orci is not expected to be involved.

According to David Stapf, CBS Television Studios President, “There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration. Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

Unfortunately this trend towards streaming services could leave the world of television fractured. Having to pay for streaming services piecemeal at $6-10 a pop is going to get complicated and confusing, and potentially more expensive than traditional cable.

Yvonne Craig, 1937-2015

by on Aug.19, 2015, under Obituaries, Television

Actress Yvonne Craig, best known for her pioneering role of Batgirl in the original Batman TV series, died on Monday in her home at the age of 78 after a two year long battle with breast cancer.

Craig’s foray into acting came quite accidentally. While working as a dancer, she had dinner with a producer who wanted to get her into films, but she was uninterested. But another man passed by her table and asked if she was an actress. The producer said, “Yes she is, and I’m her manager…” The man was Patrick Ford, the son of director John Ford, and was looking for a new leading lady to star opposite Patrick Wayne (John Wayne’s son) in The Young Land. And thus the dancer became the actress.

But it was when ABC wanted them to add the Batgirl character to Batman‘s third season that she was forever enshrined in genre fan’s memories. The purple-suited, motorcycle-riding female superhero (one of the first such live action roles), who’s real identity was a mystery even to Batman himself but was in reality Commissioner Gordon’s daughter Barbara, the librarian, helped ABC’s decision to pick up the show for a third (and final) season.

Star Trek fans will also remember Craig as the beautiful (but insane) green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the episode “Whom Gods Destroy”.

Private services are planned but not set. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the cancer research and treatment center, the Angeles Clinic Foundation.
