Could a lot of missing Doctor Who episodes have been found?

by on Jun.16, 2013, under Television

[Alas…it looks more and more like this was a hoax being perpetrated by the so-called “eccentric engineer”, as some sort of negotiating ploy with the BBC…sad. Still remains to be seen what the ultimate result is, though.]

Fans of the classic Doctor Who episodes know the story well…in accordance with standard BBC practices at the time, many episodes of Doctor Who were destroyed or erased to make room in the BBC Archives – mainly because no one ever though that the material was worth keeping for long term rebroadcasting, until 1978 when they stopped the practice. Many of the serials were lost entirely. Some were lost in parts.

When the show became hugely popular, demand for the old episodes increased – but many weren’t in the archives. Over time, some episodes were discovered at other broadcasters, or in attics, saved by engineers, recorded from broadcasts, etc. It’s been a long and slow process – all episodes of the Third Doctor have been recovered. But still many remain missing. 10 whole serials still remain missing, and many more parts of serials.

That may be about to change.

Bleeding Cool reports on a reliable rumor that the BBC may have secured a large cache of videotapes/films, apparently kept by an eccentric TV engineer in Africa. Lots and lots of tapes, in fact. Possibly everything from the Hartnell years, and the entire “Evil of the Daleks” serial, where only the second of seven episodes had previously been found.

Word is that we’ll hear about it – and maybe see it – as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration.

Keep your fingers crossed!

He’ll be back: Schwarzenegger in, Ellisons and Paramount share cost on new Terminator movie

by on Jun.14, 2013, under Movies

It looks like a new Terminator movie will finally get made, with the man who was central to the franchise set to return.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been attached to the project for a while, and Megan Ellison (daughter of Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison) recently purchased the right to the franchise. Now Megan and brother David have agreed to each put up one third of the costs of a new movie, with Paramount picking up the final third.

However, the film still doesn’t have a director yet, with Fast and Furious 6‘s Justin Lin passing on a script being developed by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Dracula 2000), but plans are to start filming in January.

Are there 10 episodes almost completed for Star Wars: Clone Wars?

by on Jun.13, 2013, under Television

We know there was at least some measure of completed footage for episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars left in limbo after the announced cancellation in March – including the first signs of the infamous “Order 66” being programmed into the clones.

But just how much almost-finished material was there? According to composer Kevin Kiner, who has done all the music for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, they may in fact have 10 episodes near completion. In an interview with the Full of Sith Podcast, Kiner said, “We have about 10 shows that we’re still working on that are going to be part of the special material. And even hopefully there’s going to be a soundtrack record as a part of this special material, we’ll see…they’re in negotiations about that so we’re not positive that’s going to happen.”

In addition, during the recent Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, during one of her “Behind The Force” shows, Ashley Eckstein also mentioned new episodes. So it seems we may not have seen the last – but we’re still not sure how and when we might see the rest.

Eureka‘s Neil Grayston, Alphas‘ Erin Way and others in special celebrity edition of Total Blackout

by on Jun.11, 2013, under Television

It’s finally happening…celebrities will be facing the fears of Total Blackout! If you had a sharp eye in the new season’s previews, you may have caught Eureka‘s Neil Grayston (Fargo) – and I knew that an episode had been filmed quite a while ago, but I never got any info as to who was in it…back in 2011, when the the press were given a preview of the show, Eureka‘s Colin Ferguson bravely faced the dark with good results, and I asked then when we might see a celebrity version, but they wanted to get the show up and running first…but now the time has come.

On the July 9th episode, “Celebrity Blackout,” international music superstar Aubrey O’Day (Making the Band, Celebrity Apprentice) joins television host Bob Guiney (Showhouse Showdown, The Bachelor), and actors Erin Way (Alphas, Detroit 1-8-7) and Neil Grayston (Eureka, Wonderfalls) as they go head-to-head in pitch blackness playing Total Blackout for a cause! In a first for the series, all four contestants will participate in each of the show’s three challenges with an opportunity to win up to $15,000 for their individual charities. Charities represented include Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (Guiney), Responsibility (O’Day), Lungevity (Way), and Doctors without Borders (Grayston).

Total Blackout is a half-hour, extreme game show hosted by Jaleel White (Family Matters, Dancing with the Stars) in which contestants battle each other and their fears in a series of challenges played in complete darkness. There are no lights, no blindfolds and no-holds-barred as the players face their anxieties and unexpected surprises in a series of nerve-wracking games.

Now, if we can get a few more of these…who’s up for a special Warehouse 13 edition?
