Another sneak peek at holiday Eureka: “Do You See What I See?”
by Doc on Dec.02, 2011, under Television
Thanks to Syfy and NMS I’ve received an updated copy of the Eureka holiday episode, which airs next Tuesday, December 6th at 8/7c. This version had more of the completed animated segments, so I thought I’d give a little preview on what the episode is about and what you’ll see (note that if you want to be completely surprised as to the styles of animation you’ll see, stop reading).

Ellison drops lawsuit after watching In Time
by Doc on Dec.01, 2011, under Movies
Remember that Harlan Ellison lawsuit against New Regency and director Andrew Niccol over the movie In Time that was reported as settled but really wasn’t? Well it’s over anyways.
I have confirmed with both Ellison’s and Niccol’s lawyers that the action has been dropped, and both sides have agreed to the following joint statement:
“After seeing the film In Time, Harlan Ellison decided to voluntarily dismiss the Action. No payment or screen credit was promised or given to Harlan Ellison. The parties wish each other well, and have no further comment on the matter.”
So there you have it. The lawsuit was originally sparked by what Ellison saw as similarities between the movie and his own story, “‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said The Ticktockman”, namely the dystopian future in which people lived for a fixed amount of time, and that they could lose time if they violate anything. In the movie, time is literally money – everyone starts off with a fixed amount, and they earn more and pay for things with it. The movie struggled in theaters, however, grossing about $35 million domestically, and reaching only 38% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.
Universal Hollywood will reportedly get Harry Potter
by Doc on Nov.30, 2011, under Fun Stuff, Movies
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter may be getting a twin…and perhaps a lot more siblings. Earlier this month Universal Studios President Ron Meyer said in an interview, while panning recent studio failures, said, “Yes” when asked about plans to build additional Harry Potter parks.
Well now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that a second Wizarding World of Harry Potter is on the way (paid subscription required to read the whole article) – and the location will be at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Not much more details, other than an official announcement may come next week. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was a huge success in Orlando (see a previous trip report here), helping to bolster the flailing Islands of Adventure park. Rumors have gone around about a possible expansion to that area, but with the possibility of money going to the other coast to build fresh there, I wonder if that pay delay any expansion plans.
BBC apparently pulls already-filmed Doctor Who Christmas Confidential
by Doc on Nov.29, 2011, under Television
We already knew that the BBC will not produce any more Doctor Who Confidential specials to tie in with future episodes. But an apparently already-filmed Confidential to tie in to the upcoming Christmas episode, “The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe” (which airs at 9pm ET Christmas night on BBC America for those of us on this side of the pond) will also not be shown, despite the fact it already exists.
According to Gillane Seaborne, who produced the Confidential series, said, “The biggest regret is the episode of Confidential we’ve filmed for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special which now won’t be shown. So I guess in the fine traditions of Doctor Who, we now have our very own missing episode.”
Strangely, the BBC seems to believe that there is no Christmas Confidential filmed. According to a BBC spokesman, “While Doctor Who Confidential has been decommissioned, all existing episodes will be shown. But there is no Christmas special.”
Perhaps it will turn up in someone’s attic in 30 years?
Syfy’s Neverland – How the great adventure began – plus new previews
by Doc on Nov.28, 2011, under Television
Next Sunday will mark the debut of Syfy’s latest fairy tale mini-series, Neverland, which will air in two parts on Sunday, December 4th, and Monday, December 5th, at 9/8c. Unlike the previous mini-series (Tin Man and Alice), it is not a twisted retelling of the story, but actually an origin prequel which explains how Peter became the “boy who never grew up”, how James Hook became a pirate captain who battles Peter, and how they and the Lost Boys found themselves in a place called Neverland where no one grows old. It stars Rhys Ifans as James Hook, Charlie Rowe as Peter Pan, and Anna Friel as pirate captain Elizabeth Bonny, along with Bob Hoskins (reprising his Hook role as Smee), Charles Dance (Dr. Fludd), Q’orianka Kilcher (the Native American princess Aaya), and Keira Knightley (the voice of Tinker Bell).

Steven Moffat also confirms – Doctor Who will return in the Fall
by Doc on Nov.28, 2011, under Television
Just in case you were still holding out hope that everyone was wrong, Steven Moffat chimed in to say that Doctor Who will return in the fall. He mentions that one reason is that traditionally it was a Fall show, not aired with “All those barbecues and children playing outside, while on the telly there are green monsters seething in their CGI-enhanced lairs? It’s just not right is it?” But he also adds, “But it’s not the whole story.”
Sounds like there were still production reasons at work.
