Every episode of every live-action Star Trek series is free on Hulu for a limited time!

by on Mar.22, 2013, under Television, Video/DVD

Oh my…Hulu has made available every episode of all the live-action Star Trek series for free! They are available for a “limited time”, which I’ve heard is the end of the month, so get watching!

And I checked – they appear to be the original uncut episodes of the original series, although with the remastered effects, at least with my spot-check of “The Trouble With Tribbles”, which has the vodka/scotch scene intact.

It seems the U.K. will find out who their superactor Benedict Cumberbatch is really playing before the U.S. will…according to Deadline, the movie premiere has been pushed up to Thursday, May 9th, the week ahead of the U.S. release (May 15th for IMAX, May 17th for wide release).

Epic Kirk to the rescue, but no love for genre at the Oscars

by on Feb.25, 2013, under Awards, Movies

The Oscars opened up last night to host Seth Macfarlane interrupted by a large-screen bearing the image of Captain James T. Kirk himself, having come back in time to help prevent Seth from being labeled the worst Oscar host ever (whether that was successful of not is a matter of opinion – although a number of jokes fell flat or may have been a little too off color, I think overall he did well – we did laugh hysterically at the “We saw your boobs” number…), but that was about the limit of the genre recognition – not that it was up for many awards. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror, Mirror all came up empty.

The one place where it couldn’t use was the Animated Feature category, where it was it was generally felt to be a two-film race between Disney features, with Brave beating Wreck-it Ralph for the honor.

Actor Robin Sachs, 1951-2013

by on Feb.06, 2013, under Obituaries

Actor Robin Sachs, who has played many different roles across the board, often in prosthetic makeup, passed away last week at the age of 61.

Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer might recognize his face as that of Ethan Rayne, but he did a lot of voice work (most recently in the game Mass Effect 3) and acted frequently in prosthetic makeup, including the role of Sarris in the Tim Allen comedy Galaxy Quest, four different roles in Babylon 5 (two Narn and new Minbari), and General Valen in (Star Trek: Voyager).

Author Peter David, well known for his works in comics and the Star Trek universe, suffered a stroke several days ago and is in the process of recovering.

Peter David has been prolific in the comics and SF genres, writing for several comic titles including an incredible 12 year run on The Incredible Hulk. He’s written episodes for several TV series including Babylon 5 and Crusade, and co created the kids show Space Cases with Babylon 5 and Lost In Space star Bill Mumy – which in the first season starred a young girl with rainbow colored hair, played by Jewel Staite, more familiar to fans as Kaylee in Firefly and Dr. Keller in Stargate Atlantis. He also did a number of Star Trek comics and novels.

Sci-Fi Storm: 2012 Review

by on Dec.31, 2012, under Fun Stuff, General News

Here are some of the big and our favorite stories we covered in 2012…

In January, rapidly rising British actor Benedict Cumberbatch joined Star Trek: Into Darkness, while CW’s Arrow dropped “Green” from the name and named Stephen Amell the lead actor.

We lost actor Ian Abercrombie and the voice of the Robot from Lost In Space Dick Tufeld.

Star Trek: Into Darkness: Cumberbatch is…John Harrison?

by on Dec.12, 2012, under Movies

I don’t see too many buying it, but the announced name of Benedict Cumberbatch’s mysterious villain role on the upcoming Star Trek: Into Darkness is apparently John Harrison…quite an anticlimactic name, don’t you think? Benedict Cumberbatch even mentions the name in an interview with MTV (via BBC America…MTV’s site has become nearly unbearable with the ads), and discusses the character and how his motivation is personal.

Is this really the character’s name? We’ll see…but the description still makes me think that Gary Mitchell is out for revenge for being buried alive on a planet outside our galaxy…
