NFPB announces 2010 list of films added to National Film Registry
by Doc on Dec.28, 2010, under Movies
The National Film Preservation Board, part of the Library Of Congress Archives, has released its list of 25 films to be added to the National Film Registry, where the films are to be specially preserved against degradation and damage (now if only that could include bans against horrible remakes). This year’s list includes The Empire Strikes Back and Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB (George Lucas’ original short that led to the full THX 1138). With Star Wars: A New Hope already in the registry (added in 1989), I expect we’ll eventually see Return Of The Jedi as well – but perhaps not the pre-trilogy.
The Force is with Katie
by Doc on Dec.10, 2010, under General News
As a followup to a story we tweeted about a couple weeks ago, about Katie Goldman and how she was teased at school because she was a girl with a Star Wars backpack and bottle and loved Star Wars, and afterwards the whole geek community stepped up. Katie got support – and gifts – from all over. Ashley Eckstein (the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: Clone Wars, founder of geek girl site Her Universe and all around super-cool geek gal – nice CNN article here) sent her a care package and she and her mom wore the t-shirts to the Chicago screening of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. And Think Geek sent a light saber. And the 501st Squadron and others took pictures with her dressed a Princess Leia.
The geeks win again…we do rule the world!

by Doc on Oct.17, 2010, under Games, Gear
Syfy Ventures, a relatively new division created during the rebranding of Syfy as part of breaking out of the cable channel constraints and become a true transmedia, tech savvy destination, announced jointly with actress Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars) during the Digital Press Tour on Monday that Syfy Ventures would join forces with Eckstein’s Her Universe brand of female genre merchandise, to produce Syfy branded merchandise under the Syfy Gear label.

Star Wars 3D theatrical releases will start in 2012
by Doc on Sep.29, 2010, under Movies
Star Wars is getting the 3D treatment. George Lucas is going to oversee the process, with Lucasfilm using some higher-end conversion houses to accomplish the task. The movies will also be released in chronological order, starting with The Phantom Menace, in 2012 and then in roughly annual installments. After that, the install base for in-home 3D may be ripe for a 3D Blu-ray release, just to make us buy them all again…
Update 9/30: Fan response has been, well, less than stellar…
Some famous screen tests
by Doc on Sep.20, 2010, under Movies
Here is a neat article from Moviefone that shows some screen tests for some famous roles – some of which got the part (Henry Thomas had the role of E.T. before it was over), a couple who didn’t (I’ve mentioned before that Han Solo could have been played by Kurt Russell instead of Harrison Ford).
