Startfleet Academy series pitched – by Shatner
by Doc on Mar.28, 2005, under Television
The long rumored “Starfleet Academy” project apparently does exist – it was pitched to Paramount last year – by none other than William Shatner. He also apparently went right to the top brass, skipping long-time Trek runner (who some say burned it out) Rick Berman, but was turned down. However, Pocket Books has asked him to turn the idea into a couple of novels which may come out next year. The idea was to follow a younger Kirk, Spock, and McCoy at Starfleet Academy.

Four Things
First, leave it to Uncle Bill Shatner to make it the “all about Kirk” show. It’s not really a bad idea but…
Second, the idea had been pitched before apparently, but to little avail.
Third, Trek needs a break. Let it go back to the fans and the non-visual media (books, comics, fansites) for some rejuvination and anticipation. At best, and maybe better, the idea should be relegated to fans to make into a show! Taking a break will probably restart the dynamo of interest in Trek again. In some several years it might be ready for prime time again.
Fourth, will Paramount actually dump Berman? That would be the best news I’ve heard for Trek in years!
